CES 2009: iHome Capsule Speakers

iHome Capsule Speakers Review
The Capsule Speakers from iHome are small. So small that when you put them together, and click them shut, they fit in a small bag that can fit in your pocket. That means when you take your iPod or iPhone somewhere with you – you can take the speakers along. This makes sharing your music an easy task. Now, the size of the speakers themselves can be sort of unassuming. You don’t expect to get much sound out of them. But when you pull them apart, plug them in, and pop up the tops of each speaker you get a lot of bang for your small speaker buck. So the “Capsule” what does that mean exactly? Well each speaker is about an inch an half tall when they’re tucked down, they lock together magnetically at the bottom to form what looks like a long black capsule. There’s indentations, and matching tabs on the bottom of the speakers that hold them together to form the capsule. The neatest part, or at least it is to me, is that when you take the speakers apart to use them, the tops of each speaker also pops up to allow for a bigger sound from the speaker. Individually, when they’re ‘up’ the speakers are about two inches.
At CES I had a chance to see a lot of the iPhone and iPod accessories from iHome. Many of them are some sort of portable speaker system for people that want to share their music on the go, or share their music at home without the use of a computer. By far, these little capsule speakers at $49.99 give a lot of portable sound for less money than what you might expect. They’ve got a good bass, especially with the tops of the speakers open, so you can crank up whatever you’re listening to without a lot of reverb or static. I’ve been listening to a few of my playlists at home through the capsule speakers when I’m reading, or working on GA and don’t want to have any other programs up on the computer. And I’m impressed with how great the sound is. I’m also especially impressed that even though I’ve been listening to them pretty steadily for a few weeks, I haven’t had to plug them in yet to charge them. And besides the sound, the fact that they’ve got a long battery life, and the ability to charge via USB makes them a pretty great, and portable way to listen to your music.
You can check out the Capsule speakers on the iHome site here in Red, Black or Silver.
