Cake Mania – because everyone loves cake

If I were to describe this game in a sentence it would be the following “It is a game about making cakes.” Cake Mania for the Nintendo DS is no different from its PC counterpart. You play as Jill, a young woman who has just finished culinary school. She returns to find that her grandparents’ bakery has been closed down and she is determined to earn the shop back no matter what, even if she has to work from her home.

The game’s objective is simple. People come into the shop, order food via menus that you pass out, and you make the cake based on their orders. That is the gist of what you do for the game’s eighty-four levels.

Graphics:
The game’s graphics are average for a DS game. But they could have been better especially on the 3D side, after all the DS’s purpose is to showcase 3D graphics on a handheld.
Graphics score: 7/10

Controls:
The controls for this game are the best feature. The controls are simple and to the point. The touch-screen works great here. For an example to turn on the oven all you do is touch the oven with the stylus, and it is the same for any of the other functions. Plus it saves you time and you really have to rely on quick reflexes to get to the goal.
Controls score: 9/10

Flow:
Ah the dreaded flow. The flow can be described in two words, boring and repetitive. You do the same actions that you learned in the first level for the remaining eighty-three levels except you can purchase upgrades but even that doesn’t last too long. That’s hoping that you play enough to purchase all of the upgrades.
Flow score: 4/10

Fun Factor:
This is a fun game for a short time. That is understood seeing as this was a casual game to begin with. But making the game longer just zapped all the fun out of it. What you used to think could be fun for hours was proved in this game not to be, just repetitive and boring.
Fun score: 6/10

Female Aspect:
This game definitely touches on a female subject, cooking as well as having a strong female character, Jill. Jill can be considered a strong example of someone who works hard and is determined to reach her goals no matter what.
Female Factor score: 9/10

Replay Value:
Don’t bother replaying this game unless for some reason you are extremely bored. Your patience with the game probably won’t last long enough to even finish the game.
Replay Score: 2/10

Vainya’s comments: Skip it, if you want to play the game play the casual PC version. This game was made to play for a short time and I think it should stay that way. No one really wants to sit through eighty-four repetitive levels.
