Buffy the Vampire Slayer to get a reboot ?

A reboot of older pop culture is the main inspiration in Hollywood right now. Start from the beginning of the story and the geeks will come. Just make sure to explain the reboot and studios are set for a string of movies if successful. This summer started with Wolverine Origins and Star Trek both of which did very well in sales.

The next series that could be tapped for a “reboot” might be Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This reboot would explore a darker movie that they could build a series from. Unfortunately, Joss Whedon is not being involved in current talks for the new movie. Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui on the remake.

The producers do not rule out Whedon’s involvement but have not yet reached out to him.Speaking from Tokyo, Fran Kuzui said the company is constantly approached not only about sequels but theater, video games and foreign remakes for “Buffy.” When Vertigo’s Lee contacted them, they were intrigued.

“It was Roy’s interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us,” she said, noting that original exec producer Sandy Gallin also was consulted. “It was based on our respect for what he does, and his particular sensitivity to Asian filmmakers, that we wanted to work with him.”

Kuzui, who is prepping do direct a movie in Japan in the fall, added: “Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this.”

The new film would not have a connection to the tv series or any of the characters that fans fell in love with. While reboots are popular, would fans see a Buffy without Joss Whedon?

I don't know, I think it's a bit overkill personally. We're having enough trouble trying to wrap our heads around movies made out of games and books! Now we have to deal with remake of a (not very good) Buffy movie?Yeah, I don't think it will fly if Joss isn't on board. And diehard fans will want to see the cast from the movie and TV series in it too I would imagine. That's if they can find Sarah Michelle Gellar to start with.

This is blasphemy at its very finest. Kind of like trying to do Spaced without Pegg and Frost... Maybe this will go down in flames as well.

Buffy without SMG and Joss does not exist. Not to mention, it's sort of stupid to do a movie while there's a story continuing in the comics if that story isn't involved. Like do it right, or don't bother.
