Uproar over gender biased contest causes change at IGN

IGN and District 9 decided to launch a contest last week to give a reader a chance to win a trip to Comic Con. The contest gave the winner VIP access to the convention. While the form let readers choose a gender, the small print said that the winner would be a male between the ages of 18-24. We covered this in our forums here and many other sites chose to blog about the contest. We emailed IGN for a comment but did not receive one. The controversy caused IGN to announce a second contest that will be open just for women. The age of the male or female has to be between 18-24. The men have 11:59pm June 22nd to apply while women entries have to be received by July 4th. According to their rules, each winner will receive a trip to San Diego Comic Con and be IGN’s

    E3 2009 Demo – Mass Effect 2

By now, you may have already heard some of the big news surrounding Mass Effect 2 from EA and BioWare.  We had a chance at E3 to sit and watch the game play demo and see some of the exciting story that’ll be in the new game.  One of the coolest additions to the game is the ability to continue conversations while in motion, so there’s no more stopping to chat and losing time on your way somewhere – and those choices will let you have a bigger impact during cut scenes as well, letting you choose what to say, and how your adventure with Commander Shepard turns out.  I especially think that the interrupt feature is a nice touch – which was demo’d to us by the Commander stopping a discussion by shoving a guy out of a building. And one of the most surprising and sort of revealing parts

Weird Al releases a new single and video

I’ve been a huge Weird Al fan since I was younger. He’s been great with mixing pop culture and popular songs together to make some classic hits (“Amish Paradise” and “All about the Pentiums” being two favs that come to mind). So it’s not too much of a surprise that he’s come up with a song about Craigslist. It’s currently available on Amazon and the iTunes music store. He also released a video for the song in which he mimics Jim Morrison pretty well. The song itself isn’t one of his better ones, but the video makes it.

Adult Videogamer Market worth paying attention to

As an adult gamer, the results of the CompaniesandMarkets.com survey are not surprising. But maybe they are to outsiders. The survey showed that 114 million American adults play videogames. Videogamers represent more than half of the adult population with an aggregate income of $4 trillion. The study also states that stereotypes on gamers are mostly incorrect. That videogamers are active consumers. “They work out more, go out more and shop more than adult Americans who don’t play video games.” The report also shows that the prototypical videogamer is now as likely to be a woman as a man. The report overall is built to show consumer spending for various segments of gamers such as “Avid”, “Moderate” and “Occasional”. The three fastest growing segments of gamers are women, mature gamers, and family gamers.

UK Supports PEGI as rating system

The British Government has been in a tug of war trying to decide which rating system to go with in the UK. Ultimately the Government decided to go with PEGI grading system. PEGI is the Pan-European Game Information age rating system. BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC tends to rate by age, while PEGI also breaks down by what one might find in the game. BBFC Director David Cooke responded to the announcement with the following: “We have argued consistently that any games classification system needs to put child protection at its heart. It must involve consultation with the British public, command their trust, and reflect their sensibilities. It must take account of tone and context and be carried out by skilled and knowledgeable examiners. It needs to involve the provision of full, helpful and carefully weighed information to parents and the public more generally. It
