A few weeks ago, I announced that Rubik’s World was the recipient of the 2009 Parent’s Choice Silver Award. Here is the full review. This family friendly puzzle game offers seven minigames designed to stimulate the mind and teach children how to use reasoning and creativity. By giving life and character to each of the building blocks of the Rubik’s Cube, Rubik’s World has created the cubie.
Graphics:
From the title screen through each of the minigames, Rubik’s World is a vivid and beautiful design. Colorful cubies exist in their own universe. The color and graphics create a wonderful place to explore.
Sound:
The music and sound really help to create the alternate universe. Rubik’s World takes the traditional music scoring to a new level by using a minigame to allow players to help develop this element.
Controls:
This is the weakest part of the game. A few of the games really embraced the controls and were very intuitive. When this was the case, Rubik’s World was a great game. Unfortunately, this was the exception rather than the rule. Several of the games missed the boat with the control design making some minigames frustrating and difficult.
Flow:
Ok. Rubik’s World is a game made up of minigames. The menu screen shows the player which games they have completed. It was pretty typical of a Wii puzzle game.
Fun Factor:
When the controls we not getting in the way of the game, Rubik’s World was fun and addictive. However, this is a game for children and young gamers. Several of the games made such poor use of the controls that a younger child or a 38 year old game reviewer might become too frustrated to finish a challenge. Rubik’s World is also available on the DS. Althougth the DS version was not reviewed, it might be worth a look.
Female Factor:
The cubies are gender neutral. Rubik’s World is appropriate for both male and female players.
Replay Value:
With seven minigames and three dificulty levels of each, Rubik’s World has something for just about everyone. The replay value seems pretty good but still has it’s limits eventually.
