The names are coming from Japan and it's just where the title is geared towards too. Shonen doesn't mean "boys only" or "no girls allowed". The manga is just focused towards the young boys. It doesn't mean that girls can't enjoy the title. Fact: Rurouni Kenshin was serialized and part of the Shonen Jump label in Japan. It’s just a label. You don’t to be too concerned about it.

However, in terms of Manga it's a used to describe Manga aimed at boys between those ages (10 to 18 years). Some of those kinds of titles are Dragon Ball Z, Naruto and Bleach.
