Merlin Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

By: Yukino

Time to recap the latest Merlin & Arthur happenings! Remember, there are spoilers in here, so if you are waiting to see this on US or Canadian TV in “maybe” ten months from now, turn back!

Episode Three – The Nightmare Begins

Ooo Ooo! Witchy Woman!

Ooo Ooo! Witchy Woman!

When Morgana accidentally sets her room on fire after awakening from a nightmare, Uther declares someone deliberately set the fire. Morgana is shaken but knows it was somehow her fault. Speaking with Gaius, Merlin suggests that he speak with Morgana, a sympathetic ear as he knows what it is she is going through, but Gaius puts his foot down. But when has that ever stopped Merlin? Her powers completely out of her control, Morgana is afraid and confesses to Merlin that she knows it is magic. In an attempt to help his friend, Merlin asks the Great Dragon where the druids are, hoping they can help her in some way. The Great Dragon tells Merlin that Morgana should not become aware of her true powers, but Merlin believes Morgana to be a good person, and leaves without the help of the ancient beast.

Uther has sent his men to round up all those in Camelot who are suspected of consorting with sorcerers, witches or druids. Luckily, one of the men brings a list of these people into Arthur’s chambers and Merlin sneaks a glance or two. After finding a name of one sympathetic to the druids, Merlin seeks her out, saving her from being caught by Uther’s army. All he asks in return is information on where the druids are. Morgana flees the next morning to seek them out. Gaius gives Merlin a tongue-lashing when he discovers the truth behind her disappearance, and while he understands why Merlin did so, he still worries as several lives are at stake. Merlin slips out of Camelot under the cover of night, following after Morgana. If Morgana does not return to Camelot, Uther will order the deaths of all those rounded up, and Arthur’s men will find and kill the druids.

Lady Morgana wakes in a druid village after being attacked by giant magical scorpion like things. This village is where Mordred, the young druid boy from Season One, has been living since she and Merlin helped him escape. Morgana seeks advice from the druid’s leader Aglain, and he is able to give her some answers. With Arthur and his team following Merlin’s trail (all the while not knowing who they are trailing), Merlin discovers the druid camp. His attempts to convince Morgana to return to the castle fall and deaf ears, but by now it is too late. Arthur has located the camp, and so the druids begin to flee further into the forest. Merlin creates a diversion in order that Morgana can get away safely. Arthur and his men manage to find their way through the fog and attack Aglain, slaying him. Morgana, unable to move due to the wound on her leg, is retrieved and Mordred gets away.

Now safe and sound back in the castle, Morgana admits she understands who she really is to Merlin. A promise is made to keep what happened between them a secret. As Merlin leaves Morgana’s room, he is approached by Arthur who has it in his head that Merlin has romantic feelings for the Lady. Gaius learns that Morgana now knows the truth about herself, and entrusts her to Merlin’s care, to make sure that Uther never discovers the truth about his ward.
