Gaming Angels Highlight, November 2009 – Alexandria Neonakis

Chances are, if you’re a gamer who also appreciates things that are great, you’ve heard of Alexandria Neonakis. Last Valentine’s Day, her videogame-themed Valentines made their rounds on the internet, and her work became a mini underground sensation. Piquing my own interest, I decided to check  out what other art she had on her website, http://www.beavotron.com. If you’ve ever wondered what a red panda would look like dressed as Marlon Brando, or needed an even more stylized version of your favorite Team Fortress 2 characters, Beavotron is the place start. I had the chance to talk with artist extraordinaire Alexandria about her work, and hopefully what she had to say will motivate other aspiring artists to keep doing what they love. Where did you get your start? I started seriously dedicating time to drawing when I was 13 years old. It was really more of a hobby back then, but

Paranormal Activity–One Of The Scariest Films Of All Time?

According to numerous critics and a multitude of reviews, Paranormal Activity is supposedly “one of the scariest films of all time,” but I’d first like to address how-on-earth does such a low-budget movie with, essentially, a non-existent script and poorly developed characters inspire such a ridiculously successful marketing campaign? One doesn’t have to search far and wide across the intrawebz to find audience members engaging in intricate flame wars pertaining to the validity of this “factually based” film. While our tormented love-birds, Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston are wholly fictitious as the ending credits claim, it’s still remarkably surprising to hear people swear that everything about Paranormal Activity is real. For the record, it’s not. There, I stole your fun. It all started when one of my very lucky friends was able to get into a restricted, “guest-list only” showing of this film in Los Angeles. Grips and grips of

Brutal Legend X Mishka NYC tshirts

Brutal Legend is not only a game but a visit back to Heavy Metal for most people. Double Fine Productions is extending that fandom by teaming up with Mishka NYC to create two Brutal t-shirts. The Headbanger graphic above shows the spirit of Ironheade’s loyal foot soldiers. It looks like a combination of metal and punk in a pit. The second shirt is my favorite. It features a Razorgirl charging forward on a Fire Beast. Just an average day in her world. Over the next few months fans can watch the Facebook, twitter and website to see how they can get a tshirt. But right now, Mishka’s Bloglin has 2 copies of Brutal Legend for Xbox 360 and another 2 for Playstation 3 to give away. All you have to to is to email brutal@mishkanyc.com with either Xbox or PS3 in the subject line to be entered to win. Winners

My apologies for falling behind on my recaps, loyal readers! This recap covers episodes 5 and 6, which were a two part story arc. Enjoy! Pandaren Monk “sold out” in World of Warcraft

This shouldn’t surprise me, but it does. the Pandaren Monk vanity pet that Blizzard just announced is now sold out. Part of the proceeds for the Monk went to Make-A-Wish Foundation. The items were never introduced as limited, so WoW.com feels it must be an inventory error. Meaning that Blizzard should have this fixed soon and more people can spend $10 on a virtual vanity pet.

Funcom is trying to entice gamers to come back and play “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures”. Previously active players can come back and play free of charge for two weeks. They will also get a double exp boost during the free period. Allowing the player to level pretty quickly. PopCap launching free Bejeweled 2 update for iPhone and iPod touch

PopCap Games has announced a free update for Bejeweled 2 for the iPhone and iPod touch. Bejeweled 2 has sold well on the iPhone (I have it on mine), and they are adding a new mode featuring a Facebook Connect integration of the “Bejeweled Blitz” game previously only found on Facebook.com. The new iPhone Blitz game move allows gamers to post scores and achievements on their Facebook profiles. The update is free for users that have already downloaded the game. Bejeweled 2 is listed at $2.99 at the App Store for gamers that haven’t purchased it yet. “Ultimately, social gaming is about being able to play games with and against your friends, and the new Blitz update for Bejeweled 2 on iPhone lets you play against your friends anywhere,” explained John Vechey, co-founder and director of PopCap’s social gaming initiative. “This is a natural next stage in our multi-platform and

Gamers United is back for another charity event

I’m so happy to see Gamers United back again this year! The event will be collecting gifts for the Teen Lounge of the Mattel Children’s Hospital of UCLA. “When I called and found out they had a teen lounge whose gaming equipment was in disrepair and just need an upgrade, I was decided – this was the organization I wanted to fight for this year,” says Chastity Irizarry, founding member. Gamers United will be helping to rejuvenate the teen lounge and pay special attention to the often overlooked ‘tween and teen sector of pediatrics. Amy Bullock, Child Life – Child Development of the hospital stated, “The equipment in our lounge gets a high rate of use and our equipment is donated so we are happy to be able to work with Gamers United for the patients.” Of course we are in to help and so is Nyko Technologies, Custom Hotel,

    “Rapelay” – The Aftermath

“Rapelay,” a Japanese Hentai title by Illusion Soft, casually bypassed the Amazon Marketplace early 2009 and with little effort, “Rape Lay” became the core of industry controversy and a leading example of questionable content in video-games.  Admittedly, from a Journalist’s perspective, it’s always been uncommon for me to shy away from what is widely-regarded as politically incorrect or inhumane considering this subject is befitting for a curiously concerned mind however, It’s careless presentation to ordinary consumers understandably spawned ridicule and heavy debate over its casual approach toward violent, disturbing, and immoral sexual acts. Still, others deemed the sudden up-roar over “Rape Lay” as undeserving and essentially pointless, where concerned parents and censorship nuts unrightfully chose to burden themselves with bias and singularity. While I choose to explore this topic and all my topics with a liberated mind, I remain confused on the alarming amount of consumers, gamers or otherwise, who
