I know for some of my female friends who are tech inclined, went the network admin route because they didn't want to deal with all of the "math" involved. One who is in an engineering major has to regularly take crap from a couple of her professors who don't think that she should be there. It's not blatant but she gets the message. I'm pretty sure if you looked at all the fields of study out there, you'd find a similar percentage of people who started and left for whatever reason.
