Gunnar’s CES announcements include 3D support

This is the week of awesome gadget announcements at CES 2010. So far, we can gather that much of the excitement if focused around 3D entertainment. TVs shipping with that ability, ESPN starting a 3D channel, or Sony talking 3D games, it’s all 3D and it’s the big talk of CES.
Gunnar sent us their press release talking about their plans for 3D entertainment. The leading manufacturer of digital performance eyewear for gaming is creating a collection of 3D glasses enabled with components from their i-AMP(R) lens technology. These can be used with 3D platforms in gaming and video.
“This is an exciting time for the field of 3D technology,” said Rob Aarnes, GUNNAR’s president. “There have been amazing advances in the delivery of the media, but we see a massive need for someone to address the optics of the eyewear.”
Most current 3D eyewear seems to be of low construction. Many of you may have seen my tweets of aggravation during Avatar with my 3D glasses. They were scratched and uncomfortable to wear.
“While typical 3D eyewear is stamped from a flat sheet of plastic, GUNNAR lenses are shaped, formed and cut to provide distortion free optics,” said Joe Croft, co-founder of GUNNAR and EVP of Research Design & Development. “For the amount of technology and effort that goes into the creation and delivery of the content, it is a shame that the weakest link in any 3D system today is the eyewear used to view the final product. We are proud to announce our success in creating lenses of the highest optical quality to give a premium visual experience.”
Gunnar glasses are super comfortable and based on the image above, they don’t stray from their proven formula. As 3D entertainment gets more popular, it may become more important to be able to have your own pair of 3D glasses. The Ready-to-Wear versions will be priced from $89.00 to $149.99. Perscription eyewear in both configurations will be available in Q3. Which is when they’ll have me because I HATE wearing 3D glasses over my glasses.
I can’t wait to try these glasses in person because I am familiar with Gunnar’s high quality and I know that if they can keep that high level of quality, these may be the only 3D glasses you’ll need to own.
