It can get very uncomfortable, and it's only slightly tempered after realizing that Haruhi is a genuine sociopath (and thus not really as blameworthy as a normal person would be). It almost was a deal-breaker for me, and I still think it terribly weakens Kyon's character when he doesn't stop her (and I don't mean by slugging her).
