Spider-Man 4 gets a reboot treatment

Spider-Man 4 is going forward but most of the team is getting the boot in this reboot. That’s right, even though the franchise is fairly new, the studio feels it can reboot the series and start in 2012 with a new team.
Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire did not want to move forward with the current script so the studio dumped them.
“We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey, and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade,” said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio’s chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. “This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine ‘Spider-Man’ in anyone else’s hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable.”
Writer James Vanderbilt, who wrote the “Zodiac” screenplay was tapped to write a different take on spidey as he goes back to high school. This film is intended to be released in May 2012.
When the rumors of a delayed SpiderMan 4 came about, many worried that Raimi would not be free to do the World of Warcraft movie. Now it looks like he may have the free time.

This just doesn't make sense even from a financial standpoint. Altering an established franchise like this so soon after the last movie sin't goind to do well especially when you take away such keep players like the main actor and director. It's true that it has worked well before. The reboot of the Batman series went over very well and the release of The Dark Knight even broke records (although I'm sure a lot of that had to do with the unfortunate death of Heath Ledger) I think alot of the success there had to do with the fact that there was almost a decade between Batman and Robin and Batman begins, they were able to open up the franchise for a brand new generation. There was also the fact that they went in a more 'Frank Miller' direction that helped, a much darker Batman was nicer to see after the atrocity that was Batman and Robin. It also worked very well for the Hulk. The fact that Ang Lee only made the one movie for the Hulk helped. There was also a lot of Hulk fans that I know of that could never see Eric Bana as making a good Bruce Banner. Much like having Tobey Maguire BECOME Peter Parker, Edward Norton TRULY was Bruce Banner. They also made a good decision in not wasting the first half hour of the movie retelling how Bruce became the Hulk and summed it up nicely and comprehensively in the opening credits. I know many die hard Hulk fans that like to consider this one the real Hulk movie and forget that Ang Lee's version ever existed.I'm also looking forward to the X-men First Class especially if Bryan Singer really does return to helm the movie. The story arc they chose for the first three X-men movies worked well in having the Institute already established and Wolverine just stumbling into their world. Going all the way back to when Charles first founds the school gives you the liberty to change every established actor and not have fans completely freak out about it. Sir Ian McKellen has already agreed that it would just be logical for someone to replace him as a young Eric Lensherr, as much as we can do with 3D imaging these days it still just works better to hire a younger actor. For these franchises it worked and it made sense. Rebooting Spiderman really just doesn't make sense.
