EA’S First Super Bowl Commercial Doesn’t Even Feature Football

By: Tiffany Nevin

DI screenshotSure, there may be fewer traditional advertisers on this year’s Super Bowl broadcast, but it looks like they were all making way for Dante. Well, Dante’s Inferno, that is.

Electronic Arts’ very first Super Bowl commercial will introduce football fans to Dante’s Inferno, the video game based on the first part of the epic by Dante Alighieri (that will, conveniently enough, be released two days after the game). A little odd that they’re not focusing on their football games during the biggest football game, but maybe people don’t need to know about those as much. EA hopes to win over the male 18-34 age bracket, but with an event like the Super Bowl, the commercial will really reach everyone.

This commercial is only one part of a massive advertising campaign on EA’s end – they’ve got Facebook apps, a special edition of the original book, viral marketing, and even an animated feature on the way. Is the saturation too much, or is it exactly what EA needs for a game based on classic literature? Only time (and the sales numbers) will tell.
