for people who might be thinking about doing it, i backed up all the data i could and then re-formatted my PS3 as well as reset all the PS3 settings to see if that made a difference... as it turned out, i spent a long time waiting for nothing. But as of now i'm sure that we are all certain that it is the network so i think its just a matter of time before something happens

Wow, an entire gaming network down? What could cause every single PS3 to not allow gameplay offline? I guess I should be really glad that I have an xbox, though I have no idea what would happen if XBL crashed like this. Hope it gets fixed soon!

Yeah, I don't get why the disc-based stuff isn't working, either. We tried turning off the internet connection, but nada. I think some kind of trophy verification is what's messing it up. Since there's no way to retroactively get trophies (that I know of), my bet is that it has to have a connection to make sure the trophies are still there. Or something.
