Worldwake

So, as any Magic: the Gathering player knows, Worldwake hit store shelves this weekend. Also as any serious player knows, dropping the $100 on a booster box seems like a natural thing to do. Well, my friends and I decided to pool our money and buy a booster pack box, 4 extra boosters, and one of the starter decks. Of course this led to going back to one of our houses and separating the packs. The individual packs we bought outside of the box were the first to be open. Mine produced a Novablast Wurm, a mean 7/7 wurm that destroys all other creatures whenever it attacks.

Then we got into the box. My half of the packs featured Jace, the Mind Sculptor’s art and a card unknown to us. We were sad to find that there are only three different pack designs when there are usually four. My second pack of the box, my third for this new set, gave me a very nice surprise. Jace, the Mind Sculptor himself! This is the only planeswalker for the set, and the card I was wanting the most. This guy alone pretty much made whatever else appeared in the box not matter at all to me. I did get a few nice rares, like Abyssal Persecutor and another Novablast Wurm, along with a foil and non-foil copy of a rare land.

So you could imagine my surprise when, as I return home, to see a package with a few more packs and a couple intro packs. Thank you very much, Wizards! The vampire intro pack seems very interesting. I’ve been working on a vampire deck (which I’ll be talking about in an upcoming Deck Building 101 article), and this pack is filled with some very nice additions to any mono-black deck. The blue-green Mysterious Realms is one I haven’t checked out at length, but I am hopeful that it provides some nice landfall abilities.

Overall, I’m still very excited for this set and glad it’s finally released! It’s a great distraction from the looming Grand Prix and Pro Tour season that’s gearing up and kicks off in a little town near me called Oakland, CA. Happy playing everyone, and if you pull something awesome in a pack, leave me a comment! I want to know what everyone’s getting.

Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine! Jace-face is busy glaring at his (the duel-deck jace v chandra alt art) before self.

:P You could always get him on eBay? He should've dropped below his pre-order $50 by now since the release *was* Friday.

I haven't seen those +/- on the side of a card before...can you explain how that is played?

Planeswalkers, a new card type that was released first during Lorwyn (with the original 5: Jace, Chandra, Ajani, Liliana, and Garruuk), isn't like a normal creature, but it's closer to a second player. It comes into play with a set amount of "loyalty counters", the number in the box at the bottom where the p/t (power/toughness) usually is on creatures. Each + or - (or, in Mr. Mind Sculptor's case, "0") is next to an ability. You can use one ability per turn and either add (as Jace's +2 ability allows) that number of loyalty counters or subtract (as his third and fourth abilities instruct) that number. If loyalty counters reach or go below 0, then the planeswalker dies. Planeswalkers can be declared targets of attacks, just as someone can say "I attack you", they can say "I attack Jace/Elspeth/Nicol Bolas/etc.". You can block with your creatures for the planeswalkers just as you can for yourself for the sake of saving him. Also, with Zendikar's "Vampire Hexmage" and other counter-removing things, you can remove counters of other players' planeswalkers. There's some more finite details, but I realized that I've explained a lot already.
