Xbox LIVE Dropping Support for Original Consoles and Games
Tweet
In a Gamerscore News post this morning, Marc Whitten detailed the future for online support for original Xbox consoles and games – namely, that there won’t be much of one.
He stated that on April 15, they will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. He went on to talk about the vision for the “connected console” that Microsoft supposedly developed when they launched the LIVE service. He got one thing right: That the Internet would definitely revolutionize the way we experience entertainment in our living rooms. Now, they’ve expanded to include more things like Twitter and Netflix support (despite the lack of an included browser, but that’s beside the point).
Whitten seemed to most regret having to abruptly cut off service for dedicated Halo 2 players more than five years after its launch. He lauded the Halo franchise as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming, and then pointed out that Halo 3 is available for online play. (Yeah, we’re taking away your old game, but you can upgrade to this new service!)
He explained a pretty good reason to make this change: Microsoft needs to make changes to the service that are incompatible with original Xbox v1 games. They will contact Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by the discontinuation of support and encourage members to check their LIVE messages and associated e-mail account for more information in the next few days or weeks.
What kind of changes do you think they’re making that would require this? Speculate in the comments.
