If You Couldn’t Tell, GDC 2010 Is Happening

If you haven’t noticed the influx of new news today, well, it’s happening. The Game Developers Conference, that is. This is the largest yearly gathering of interactive entertainment professionals, and runs from today to March 13 (Saturday) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Companies come together and release a lot of what they’ve been holding in for the past few months. This is when we start to hear about the stuff that will have us excited for months to come. If you actually go, you can attend hundreds of sessions (over 400!) that include lectures, demos, roundtables, and even the Game Developers Choice Awards. Pretty much every aspect of the industry is covered, from mobile phone games to AI and game localization. This year’s keynote will be delivered on Friday by Sid Meier, who will speak on the psychology of game design. We do have a contact at GDC,

    Halt! You’re Under Arrest!

Well, not really! But guess what Section 23 have told us? “You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle” has gone on sale today, and that’s not all! First let me clue you in on “You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle Collection 1“. The release is being brought out by Sentai Filmworks, and is a continuation from the “You’re Under Arrest: Fast & Furious” installment. Here’s a synopsis of the new story: The ladies of Bokuto Police Station are back, but there have been some BIG changes! Miyuki’s been in the U.S., studying American police techniques while Natsumi’s actually been serving in the military! So have these world-changing experiences had any effect on how everyone’s favorite girls in blue carry out their duties protecting the Japanese public? Have they gained a more “mature” perspective? Well, let’s just say that, if anything, they may be even wilder and less cautious than before (Except for that

Tiger Woods PGA Tour ’11 to Feature Ryder Cup

Sure, Gatorade, GM, and Accenture got rid of him, but EA’s got a whole franchise based around him that they don’t want to give up, and PGA Tour ’11 is more proof of that. It will be available June 8. This entry in the series is notable because it finally features the Ryder Cup, a series of golf events that bring together European and American golfers for the prestige rather than just the cash. You can choose between the American and European groups and compete in the various Ryder Cup competitions. You will be able to take the competition online on PS3 and 360, but offline, you can switch off between groups to influence the results of other competitions. The cover also features Rory McIlroy, a golfer from Northern Ireland who represents the Europeans. This title will utilize Wii MotionPlus, and apparently, the new PlayStation motion control may come into

Harmonix Proves There’s a Reason to “Become a Fan” of Things on Facebook

See! There’s a reason to be a fan of something on Facebook! Rather than…oh, I don’t know, sending out a press release, Harmonix chose to announce Rock Band 3 today to more than just the media. Everyone that is a fan of the series on Facebook got a simple little update today on their News Feed. Meaning that when I checked Facebook just now, I wasn’t fooling around. I was working. Thanks for the update, Harmonix! We can expect the game out during the “holiday season.” (Yay, I can sing Lady Gaga and everything on this new disc as well. It’s a win-win.) Follow

NBC and Universal Offer the First-Ever MMO Based on Battlestar Galactica

If you’re still sad that Battlestar Galactica lives on only in reruns and your DVD collection, Universal’s got a way for you to live it all over again – an MMO based on the series. The online game leads Bigpoint’s GDC 2010 showings, and will be launching what I assume is a 30-day free trial this fall on syfy.com. The game was developed using Unity technology, meaning that you get a full MMO experience without downloading a client – it’s all done from your browser, even full 3D rendering! You choose whether to fight as a Cylon or a human, and gameplay features space combat, exploration, and missions. The missions will define the game’s overall storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar universe. Assets from the television production will also be used, to make the title as authentic as possible. Follow

Read the First Two Chapters of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Most people have heard of Seth Grahame-Smith from his already successful novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. He now has a new novel out that explains the hidden history of the Civil War and a secret side to one of the greatest Presidents of the United States. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter sounds a bit crazy, but I’m more inclined to read after reading P&P&Z and liking it. The novel is written from Seth’s view after he is given some letters and leather bound books by a customer who would regularly come to his store. This customer and these writings turn Seth’s world upside down from what he knew about the world and from what he thought he had learned about history. But it probably wouldn’t be easy to realize that vampires are real and that Abraham Lincoln was one of the best hunters. But if you’re still iffy, you can

EA Agrees to Publish Games by 38 Studios

Soon, EA will have two different kinds of relationships with Major League Baseball MVP Curt Schilling. You’ll have the obvious baseball connection, and then…this. Schilling is the founder of 38 Studios (whose CEO is Jennifer MacLean!), and they just inked a publishing agreement with EA for their single-player RPG “Project Mercury.” It’s currently in development at Big Huge Games, and will be published by EA Partners, the same studio behind Rock Band and ports of The Orange Box. Project Mercury apparently takes place in a universe created by R.A. Salvatore, with Todd MacFarlane art direction. Salvatore will be speaking at GDC 2010 on Thursday from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM in Room 306 in South Hall at the Moscone Center. The topic? “From Fantasy to Franchise: How to Build a Universe Worthy of Devotion.” He’ll go into his time as 38 Studios’ Executive Creator of Worlds, so if you’re there
