Study Reveals Likelihood of Online Gaming Currency Purchases, Offer Completion

Have you played any online social games recently? If so, you may have noticed that they’re becoming tiny industry cash cows, even though you don’t really want to pay for currency. Game companies have noticed this, don’t worry. Offerpal, who runs quite a few of the promotions attached to game incentives, released the results of a survey at GDC that sheds light on some statistics related to social gaming currency incentives. First off, a little over half (53.3%) of people who play games are willing to complete marketing actions (like filling out a survey, buying from a specific online retailer, or watching a video) in exchange for in-game currency. Sure, that’s one way to do it. (Just a reminder that if you choose this route, be incredibly careful when completing these offers – especially the surveys! You don’t know who’s selling your information once they get it, and you have

Warner Bros. Introduces Title Supporting PlayStation Move

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic series, will be launching this fall on multiple platforms. On PlayStation 3, however, it will feature support for the recently-announced PlayStation Move peripheral. In the game, you play as Aragorn, including the ability to wield his sword and bow and ride his horse. The motion gameplay allows every controller gesture to instantly translate to a weapon strike in-game. Two-player co-op featuring motion controls will also be available on the PS3 and Wii, and it allows you to battle side-by-side with a friend. The game will feature the voice talents of original Lord of the Rings actors Sean Astin and John Rhys-Davies, reprising their roles as Sam and Gimli. Howard Shore’s soundtrack will also be used. The game will be out fall 2010 for the PlayStation 3 (and Move), PlayStation 2, PSP, Wii and Nintendo DS.

She Cooks, She Gardens, and Now…Mama Crafts

In a new addition to the family of Majesco’s  “______ Mama” titles, Mama gets to craft. On the DS, of course. The new title lets you create a multitude of artsy-crafty stuff! The stylus-based title will have you making a patchwork quilt, xylophones, and even dolls (in the shape of Mama, naturally). Any creations you make can be used within the game itself – make an apron, and Mama can wear it, for example. Multiple patterns are available for variation’s sake, and there’s even multiplayer for crafting with a friend. The game is expected out this fall.

Modern Warfare 2 “Stimulus Package” Coming to Xbox LIVE on March 30

A couple of Modern Warfare 2 announcements were announced by Activision, even in the midst of their scandaltastic goings-on with the game’s developer, Infinity Ward. First off, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package (the first DLC for the title) drops on March 30. This brings new multiplayer maps to the title. Xbox LIVE is the first to get the update, but the price wasn’t announced (if there is one). If you’re a Silver Xbox LIVE member, there’s going to be free multiplayer for you from March 12 to 15, just so you can try it out (and of course to entice you to switch to the Gold side of things). But hey, you’ve got other reasons to switch to Gold besides Modern Warfare 2 – our Xbox LIVE Community Arcade Night, co-hosted with The Married Gamers! (If you want me, I’ll be in the Yahtzee room, natch.)

Video Game Design Category Added to Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

AMD, a technology solutions company, has sponsored a new category in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards run by The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers: Video Game Design. They are doing this as part of their “Changing the Game” campaign, which aims to equip youth with the ability to create games with social content. They do this by encouraging science, math, technology and education skills. AMD believes that teaching video game design also encourages this. The Awards, which have a storied 87-year history, represent the cutting edge of youth creativity, and adding a prize for young developers fits right in. The grant provided by AMG will allow them to host multiple workshops and fund several scholarships. The Alliance anticipates 700 entries for the video game design category.
