Chief Technology Officer Unveils “Apps for Healthy Kids” at GDCA

Last night, at the Game Developers Choice Awards, U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra addressed the attendees by video to deliver a message from First Lady Michelle Obama. The message announced the launch of the Apps for Healthy Kids challenge in support of Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign against childhood obesity. The challenge: Incorporate recently released Federal nutrition data (the MyPyramid 1,000 food database) into Web or mobile-based games and tools to inspire kids and their parents to eat right and get active. “You know better than most the power of games to deeply engage our nation’s youth. Today I’m asking you to dedicate your creative energy and skills to address one of America’s biggest challenges and help make healthy living fun, exciting, and relevant for kids,” the First Lady said in her letter, which is currently posted in full on the Game Developers Conference Web site. Of course, what’s  a

Monaco Takes Home $20,000 Independent Games Festival Prize

Pocketwatch Games’ Monaco got the really big prizes at the Twelfth Annual Independent Games Festival, hosted at GDC this week. The title received the $20,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, as well as the award for Excellence in Design. Both fairly big deals. Other award recipients for the year include PLAYDEAD’s LIMBO (Excellence in Visual Art and Technical Excellence), and Closure Team’s Closure (Excellence in Audio). Previous winners include a lot of titles we’ve come to know and love: Braid, Audiosurf, Castle Crashers, and World of Goo. Out of 301 entries, they had to be narrowed down by 170 judges, so the winners this year will likely show up as downloadable games on our consoles and computers at some point. Congratulations to all the winners from us here at GamingAngels – A full list is below. Seumas McNally Grand Prize Monaco, by Pocketwatch Games Innovation (Nuovo) Award

This morning at GDC, Bethesda showed off a cinematic trailer for their new first-person shooter, Brink, which is coming this fall to PC, 360, and PS3 (Supposedly September 7, but that can always change). I would just say that it looks nice and fun, but it’s Bethesda – what do you expect? Video below. Video Games | Brink | GDC 10: Cinematic Trailer XBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii Follow

Guest Review – The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS is the newest of cartoon Link’s adventures, but it’s not merely a continuation of the same themes and ideas of Wind Waker or any other of the previous games. Rating: E (for Everyone) Genre: Action – Adventure Players: 1 Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Release Date: December 7th, 2009 BUY Two big changes provide a basic shift in game play that make this addition to the series: The most obvious is you’ve got neither your trusty steed nor your royal boat – you’ve just acquired your first train! This mode of transportation is the only one available across the wide world – it’s only in towns and dungeons you get to stretch your legs. It is somewhat limiting (read: boring) at first, but as both new tracks and new options for your train open up, it becomes an enjoyable part of the game.

Uncharted 2 Rakes In the Acclaim at Game Developers Choice Awards

Last night, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2 won five awards at the Game Developers Choice Awards (you know, the Oscars of games). That’s…uh…half of the awards that go to games, including the Game of the Year Award. There are three categories that go to a person (that I didn’t include in the ten), and I don’t think Nathan Drake can be nominated. Yeah. (So, basically, if you haven’t played it, you ought to.) Other winners include thatgamecompany’s Flower, 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts, Runic Games’ Torchlight (the award is “better than a leg lamp,” according to them) and Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Asylum. A full list of winners, including special awards, is below. Game of the Year Uncharted 2 (Naughty Dog) Best Game Design: Batman: Arkham Asylum (Rocksteady Studios) Best Writing: Uncharted 2 (Naughty Dog) Best Debut Game: Torchlight (Runic Games) Best Technology: Uncharted 2 (Naughty Dog) Best Handheld Game: Scribblenauts (5th Cell)

    Review: Life’s A Zoo.tv (Volume 1)

Just when you thought you were safe from reality TV (or safe enough) another one crawls out from the dark recesses of a desperate mind. Release Date: 21/10/2009 Languages: English Genre: Comedy Runtime: 154.0 mins While it isn’t your typical reality show, “Life’s A Zoo.tv” certainly has the qualities you can expect. Meet 7 animals: Morreski (an alcoholic Bulgarian bear), Rico (a gay caffeine-addicted crocodile), Ray (a bong-devoted monkey), Dr D (a rapping penguin), Jake (a horny Canadian pig), Minou (an African supermodel cat) and Chi Chi (a sweet and naïve panda). They have all been thrown together in a mansion in Saskatchewan – Big Brother style. Each episode depicts the characters being faced with a challenge that usually pits them against their housemates. This tends to result in a fight to survive or just a massive all-out brawl. If one of the characters fails then they face possible eviction.

    VIZ Media Debuts Dorohedoro

On the 9th, Viz Media debuted Dorohedoro, a manga about “a battle between diabolical sorcerers and the monsters they’ve created.” The full manga will be available on March 16th. “In a city so dismal it’s known only as “the Hole,” an underground group of Sorcerers have been abducting people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious “experiments” in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a mutant man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, Nikaido and Caiman hunt and kill the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they’ll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of “cleaners” into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.” The Manga was created by Q Hayashida, known for her MAKEN X ANOTHER which
