Kmart Jumps Into the Ring of “Good Console Purchase Deals”

We usually feature Target ’round these parts as far as awesome deals go, but Kmart’s started giving it a shot as well. Until this Saturday, March 27, when you buy a Nintendo Wii either in-store or on Kmart.com, you get a $25 gift card along with it. Sure, that means you’ll have to go to Kmart to use the card, but maybe they’re banking on a little overspending on your part. (Gift cards: I love to hate them.) Want to buy it? Try this part of Kmart’s website. Follow

SMU Guildhall Alumna Challenges Gender Stereotypes in Gaming

A couple of weeks ago at GDC 2010, Guildhall alumna Jennifer Canada, who currently works for Insomniac Games, presented “Paint-by-Gender: How to add ‘pink’ gameplay to your ‘blue’ title (and still keep all the boys happy)” which was based on her thesis. She suggested that it is entirely possible to add female-friendly elements to games and still appeal to both genders (surprise, surprise). She has experience with this: As a game designer for some titles aimed at the younger set, she knows how to incorporate those elements into a successful game. It’s a little surprising that she even made it to game design in the first place. Canada graduated from Rice University with a double-major in opera performance and political science. Not exactly computer science, is it? She’d even given up on gaming because she figured that fast reflexes were necessary. Not so. So after playing The Sims, rediscovering gaming,

New Mass Effect DLC Unlocks a Thief

BioWare revealed today that a new character, a master thief named Kasumi Goto, will be added to the squad. The Kasumi – Stolen Memory PDLC pack will be available for 560 Microsoft (or BioWare) points, and features an all-new mission in which Shepard helps her with a dangerous heist. Jane McGonigal Thinks We Need to Play Even More If We’re Going to Save the World

Jane McGonigal, a game designer at The Institute for the Future, spoke at a TED Conference on how gaming can make the world a better place. Not just that, but she thinks gaming can actually save the world – but only if we do a lot more of it. That probably doesn’t make a lot of sense right now, but she uses recent ideas, like Malcolm Gladwell‘s thought that it takes 10,000 hours to become a virtuoso, to theorize that with kids gaming more than that before age 21, they’re becoming virtuosos at something - but what is it? Don’t worry, the 20-minute video explains it all, and adds in a lesson on some ancient gaming history as well. Follow

BFBC2, God of War 3 and Activision Contest Winners

It took a couple of days to make sure everyone was contacted, but now I can announce the winners for the past three contests! The winner of the Xbox 360 & Battlefield Bad Company 2 package provided by GameStop is @TheTriscuit! He was one of the several people who picked Charlie’s Angels as the winning team in the Celebrity Bracket Challenge and was randomly chosen by GameStop as the new owner a 360 system and BFBC2. Our What’s Up With Activision contest, which gives some love to Neversoft & Infinity Ward following the insanity that’s been happening at both Activision branches, saw Risha Korrine win a copy of Modern Warfare 2 and Scott Snell win Guitar Hero 5 for leaving comments over on our Facebook group. And finally, the winner of the God of War collection for the PS3 as well as a God of War 3 hoodie, is MSGROCKS1.

    Review: Final Fantasy XIII

Final Fantasy XIII is the first of three games in the FF13 set featuring a lovely cast of characters, an engaging story, and creative gameplay. Rating: T for Teen Players: 1 Genre: JRPG System: Xbox 360 Publisher: SquareEnix Release Date: March 9, 2010 RENT/BUY Anyone who knows me knows that I am completely obsessed with the Final Fantasy games. Even though X-2 and XII aren’t on the top of my list of favorites (a spot held by IX), I still enjoyed playing through them. So, of course, when I went to pick up this game, I had very high hopes and, admittedly, high expectations. Almost instantly, I’m captivated with the opening cutscenes and find myself squeaking and crying out “Chocobo!” when I get the first glimpse of Sazh’s baby chocobo that lives in his hair. One thing I both liked and disliked were the characters. The cast spanned a wide

New Naughty Bear Trailer Is Adorably Twisted

We’ve mentioned Naughty Bear in the past, but I don’t think I got just how disturbing something could be while maintaining cuteness. Here, you’ll see a teddy bear attempting to vomit (I wonder if stuffing comes out), and generally reenacting something from the movie “Alien.” I think this has just become a must-buy for my PS3. (The game will be out in the second quarter of this year.) Video Games | Naughty Bear | Alien Parody Trailer XBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii Follow
