The Nintendo Wii has found it’s way into most households and families have all experienced playing some Wii titles together. Nintendo is now showing that they Nintendo Wii games aren’t just for fun, but have a competitive side as well.
Nintendo is launching the first Wii Games: Summer 2010, national competition. Starting July 16 in Liberty State Park in New Jersey and ending in my home town of Los Angeles on September 3-5. Unfortunately I’ll be getting married during that time.
The event is open to kids of all ages and the competition will focus on the following five activities: Basketball and Bowling in Wii Sports Resort™, the Hula Hoop® challenge from Wii Fit™ Plus, the platforming adventure of New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii and the high-speed racing thrills of Mario Kart™ Wii. The tournaments will be held at Six Flags theme parks. There will be other demos and Wii games for families or friends that aren’t competing.
“The Wii Games: Summer 2010 events are a celebration of the fun, active, inclusive spirit of Wii,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “I’m sure players will have fun interacting with friends and family members while they train for each event. Even better, they’ll get to demonstrate their skills in front of enthusiastic audiences everywhere.”
Qualifying winners will travel to LA for the national championships where they can win prizes, trophies and fame. Olympic gold medalist, Shawn Johnson will be the Ambassador for the games.
“I play Wii games with my friends and family all the time,” said Shawn Johnson, a medal-winning gymnast at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. “I’m looking forward to watching people from all over the country coming together to have fun and compete.”
