Sony “moves” over four million units – to stores

It’s only been two months, but Sony reported today that their PlayStation Move motion controller has already sold over 4.1 million units in North America, Europe and Asia.

However, it’s pretty easy to lie with numbers (as someone who loved stats class, I feel like this gives me at least a tiny bit of authority on that fact). And while Sony hasn’t quite lied to us here, they did leave out one little fact – the 4.1 million doesn’t represent the number of controllers in the hands of consumers, but instead the number that has gotten shipped to stores. Oh. Not really as impressive when you look at it that way.

Engadget also did a little bit of digging and found that 75% of these numbers can be attributed to bundles (the Sports Champions/Eyepet bundles or the console bundles). Sony also apparently told Joystiq that they’re really only supplying the number of units that retailers ask for – so (back to my interpretation) we should be attributing this (and any Kinect sales numbers we’ve seen, I think) to retailers stocking up for the big holiday shopping push. If we can ever see a full number of units in homes, that’s when this will really get interesting (especially given that families with the Move may end up buying more than one, and that’s not necessary with Kinect).
