Today’s new game releases are, at the very least, going medieval in 3D

Today’s a fairly big day for new game releases. Not only do we get the first crop of 3DS titles, since this is the last big release Tuesday before the system’s launch on Sunday, but a few other big-name players are coming out of the gate, as well. Rather than make a zillion news posts about everything that’s popped into my inbox today, you get one great big one. So, without further ado…the list! The Sims Medieval Crysis 2 LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars Hoard Chainz Galaxy Tomb Raider HD Trilogy Swarm Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy Asphalt 3D: Nitro Racing Ridge Racer 3D Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (PC) Rayman 3D PlayStation Move Heroes …and even a couple more smaller titles. But that’s a pretty substantial list as it is. Are you planning to pick up any of these this week? I’d love

EA removing instruction manuals from all future game releases

Not only are a ton of newspapers and magazines getting the axe these days, but another paper staple is about to become part of history, as well — the instruction manual included with games since…well, the very beginning. Electronic Arts announced that all future game releases will not include game manuals, which has upset a few people who still love their paper manuals. I know I will – as a kid, I would carry them around with me as a way to placate myself between gaming sessions. They’re especially useful when I’ve taken a long break from playing something and don’t want to download a PDF to remember how to make it work, but whatever.

Today, Valve announced that they’ll be adding the SILK audio codec to Steam’s voice chat. This is the same tech that makes your voice calls on Skype sound oh-so-good. (Assuming that your Internet is perfect, anyway.) Voice chat is available on the desktop as well as inside your games, in both one-on-one and group chat varieties. Valve have also released the first in a new series of Portal 2 “investment opportunity” videos, narrated by Cave Johnson (or, ya know, J.K. Simmons) and featuring everyone’s favorite co-op robots. This time, we cover panels. (Not crushers, but they sell those, too.) They’re the planks of tomorrow! “Portal 2 is the best documentary-style investment opportunity game we’ve ever contributed to,” said Gabe Newell, President of Valve, “and we’re confident that savvy investors will immediately see the value in these product demonstration videos.” As usual, it’s got the trademark Portal charm and hilarity.
