DCUO launching 3D voice technology from Vivox

3D voice technology is coming to the PlayStation 3, thanks to Vivox. They will be providing the first-ever integration of 3D voice chat within a game when the technology is added to DC Universe Online. This “3D” technology allows voices to be modified and adjusted to suit a player’s location, distance and direction. So, if someone is standing right next to you, they’re going to sound louder than they would from twenty feet away. It only makes sense, really. You’ll also be able to only hear the conversations of people who are nearby. Way better than hearing everyone all the time, right? The PS3 implementation of Vivox Voice has been optimized to take advantage of specific PlayStation 3 system features and also provide a high-def sound experience. Follow

Steam offering a deal on Darkspore as well as a beta

(The alliteration in the title would have been so much cooler if it was a demo instead of a beta. Oh well.) Through Friday of this week, you can download a beta for online action RPG Darkspore on Steam for free. It’s a good chance to try the game out and help the developers at the same time. Steam is also offering a special “buy three, get one free” offer to make sure that you and your friends will be able to get in on the action at a bit of a discount (25 percent, if you’re keeping track). Darkspore, based partially on Maxis’ Spore, releases in North America on April 26. Follow

‘L.A. Noire’ selected for Tribeca Film Festival

Rockstar’s and Team Bondi’s L.A. Noire has been chosen as an Official Selection at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 20-May 1 at theaters around New York City. This is the first time a video game has been chosen for this honor. In its official guide, Tribeca calls L.A. Noire “a violent crime thriller that blends breathtaking action with true detective work to deliver an unprecedented interactive experience.” Sounds exactly right, especially if you’ve read my preview from PAX. “We’re thrilled that L.A. Noire is being recognized by the Tribeca Film Festival in this way,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “It’s a real honor, and another step forward for interactive entertainment.” Rockstar will be presenting an exclusive preview of the game during the Tribeca Talks series on April 25 at the SVA Theater, located at 333 West 23rd Street. The 60-minute presentation will include a

Here’s the rundown: Koschei the Deathless is to Russian folklore what devils or wicked witches are to European culture: a menacing, evil figure; the villain of countless stories which have been passed on through story and text for generations. But Koschei has never before been seen through the eyes of Catherynne Valente, whose modernized and transformed take on the legend brings the action to modern times, spanning many of the great developments of Russian history in the twentieth century. Deathless, however, is no dry, historical tome: it

MomoCon 2011: Wrapping up the peach con

In Japanese, the word “momo” means “peach.” On March 15 – 16, the word “momo” took on a completely different meaning as thousands of anime, gaming and science fiction fanatics met on Georgia Tech’s campus in Atlanta for MomoCon 2011. Since its birth in 2005, MomoCon has quickly become one monster of a convention, with attendance jumping from 700 to about 8,000 people from 2005 to 2010. The reason? MomoCon is absolutely free to attend and offers a cram-packed weekend of all the geekdom you could ever ask for. However, the word “free” also means, “register now” as you will may be caught in expansive lines to get a badge. Events: Boredom was never an issue at MomoCon. With the vast amount of panels, performances and special events taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday, I usually found something interesting to do. Admittedly, I did not get to attend as many panels and discussions
