Review: The Adventures of Shuggy (XBLA)

Rating: E Players: 1-2 Genre: Puzzle/Platformer Publisher: Valcon Games Developer: Smudged Cat Games Release Date: June 15, 2011 Price: 800 MSP RENT/BUY Have you ever inherited a castle? Shuggy, an adorable bat-vampire-thing, has. It’s full of creepy-crawlies, like zombies, spiders and rocks that are somehow able to move of their own accord. I think this should fairly obvious in the first place — castles are huge! There’s no doubt that at least a few rooms would have been ignored over the last few years. Maybe some rocks have become sentient. In Shuggy’s case…he’s got over 100 rooms to clear out. Ouch. And you’re a nice person, right? You’ve got to help him out for karma’s sake at the very least. And then you’ll have to find a friend for over 30 more. In The Adventures of Shuggy, you’re tasked with collecting all of the gems from each room in order

Sony Online Entertainment reduces the cost for the keys to the kingdom

Sony Online Entertainment’s All Access Pass is looking like a pretty good deal right now. In addition to several per-month price decreases on individual games, Sony’s now also offering their All Access Pass for a pretty affordable $19.99 a month max, or all the way down to $14.99 a month when you buy 12 months in advance. What’s the All Access Pass get you? You can play any SOE game with it. Feel like some Everquest? Go for it. DC Universe Online? You can play that, too. It’s the keys to Sony Online’s virtual kingdom. Get the full details here. I’d say grab that and play Star Wars Galaxies for a little while, considering it’s shutting down soon, but that game just doesn’t seem to exist, as far as the “Software Options” page is concerned. Now, remember — even if you have access to the game, you still have to

Nintendo crushes thousands of dreams with a single tweet

After a campaign that involved people sending hand-written letters to Nintendo of America, begging them for a localization of Xenoblade, The Last Story and Pandora’s Tower, Nintendo of America angered fans when they finally responded to the pleas of many. And it only took a tweet to “Operation Rainfall,” the group responsible for the campaign, to rile the masses:   Note a phrasing choice there: “right now.” That doesn’t mean they’re not coming later! So hooray for that, I suppose. (Really, Nintendo of America, you NEED new IPs in North America very, very soon.) A ton of other things weren’t planned to be released “right now,” either. The black Wii and Classic Controller Pro are just two examples of this. They’re just waiting for the right moment. (I wonder if that will be next year.)

‘Batman: Arkham City’ shows off official box art

Welcome, all lovers of everything Gotham City. Rocksteady and Warner Bros. revealed the cover art for Batman: Arkham City yesterday. Compared to the previous game’s cover, this one is definitely…different. Arkham Asylum‘s coloring was so dark and brooding, and it really fit the game itself, I think. This…is so bright. Yes, it fits with the rest of the art released so far, but honestly? I just feel some sort of disconnect between the two titles. But hey. Bruce is bloodied. At least you know you’ll be working hard, fighting that crime. Batman: Arkham City releases on October 18, 2011 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

IGDA to investigate ‘crunch time’ activities at Team Bondi

It probably sounds like fun to make a game like L.A. Noire, right? That may not actually be the case. The game’s Australian developer, Team Bondi, as well as its founder, Brendan McNamara, are about to have to answer a few questions. Brian Robbins, chair of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), has said that the group would fully investigate claims from developers which indicated several problems at the studio, among them the fact that “crunch time” for the game would typically involve 100-hour work weeks, some staff were omitted from the credits of the game’s final release and many staff members performing multiple jobs at once for extended periods of time. Robbins added that any Team Bondi employees or family members with comments relating to the investigation, positive or negative, should email qol@igda.org. McNamara has repeatedly stated that the policies at Team Bondi are not unfair. Apparently many employees,
