Take a look at Square Enix’s E3 lineup

Yesterday, Square Enix officially announced their E3 offerings, and there’s not a surprise among them. Well, I guess that’s expected. It wouldn’t be a surprise if that were the case. But, um, I don’t really expect any surprises. They’ll have Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider (which just got a trailer), Final Fantasy XIII-2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Hitman Absolution, Dead Island, Dungeon Siege III, Wakfu and Heroes of Ruin. “We’re thrilled to present a roster of games based on some of the industry’s most acclaimed franchises as well as introduce exciting new titles,” said Mike Fischer, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix, Inc. “We are incredibly fortunate to work with a global network of world-renowned studio and development partners committed to creating outstanding interactive experiences. Our goal is to entertain and engage a wide range of consumers with the best experience possible, whether they are gamers who grew up

Konami announces HD collections for three classic series

Konami announced yesterday that three of their popular franchises — Metal Gear Solid, Zone of the Enders and Silent Hill — will be getting HD collections featuring updated graphics, new art, remastered audio and achievements. For the first time, these HD collections are making their way to the Xbox 360, as well. The Metal Gear pack should release in November and will include Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. You’ll have to wait a little longer for the Zone of the Enders compilation, which will feature both the original game and the sequel. It’s out in 2012. The Silent Hill collection, however, wasn’t given a release date. So fans of that series may have quite the wait ahead. Follow

    Interview: Laura Karpman, Composer

Lately, I have had the great pleasure of interviewing some of the composers who from “behind the scenes”, help take games to the next level.  Without an amazing soundtrack, most games would lack depth and emotion.  One of these composers is Laura Karpman.  With a career in film, television, video games, concert and theater music, this four time Emmy winning composer was given the the opportunity to write the original music score to the newly released Kung Fu Panda 2 (THQ) video game.  Through Asian instrumentals and character-driven inspiration, maestra Laura Karpman and music co-producer Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum worked closely with the development  studio Griptonite Games to bring this video game to life.   “Imaginative, colorful…surprisingly   varied music.” -Variety Her portfolio includes Steven Spielberg’s Emmy award-winning miniseries Taken (DreamWorks), Emmy nominated TV series Odyssey 5 (Showtime), Annie nominated score for the animated film A Monkey’s Tale commissioned by the Chinese Government, and the highly anticipated network

    Review: Minecraft

Rating: Not yet rated Genre: Sandbox Publisher: Mojang Developer: Mojang Release Date: November 11, 2011 (currently in beta) BUY I’ve always enjoyed building things. Whether it was with blocks or lincoln logs as a kid. or later on building ridiculous houses and neighborhoods in The Sims, a favorite time sink was always building things. So it’s only natural that when I skepticly started playing Minecraft, thanks to a co-worker, I got sucked in almost immediately. Minecraft is blocks. Simplistic, pixelated blocks that make up dirt, sand, stone, coal, water and even lava in this crazy world. Each world is randomly generated unless you choose to load a seed world in single player. Single player mode is a basic survival with a day and night cycle. Nighttime is dangerous as that’s when the things that can attack you spawn. Your main enemies are Skeletons, Zombies and Spiders. Zombies and spiders will

Take a peek at Lara’s new look in action in the debut cinematic for ‘Tomb Raider’

A cinematic trailer titled “Turning Point” debuted on last night’s GameTrailers.TV, and Crystal Dynamics has already posted the video to YouTube. That was quick (and appreciated). In this trailer, we get a good look at Lara in action…but this action isn’t of the gameplay variety. She gets down, dirty and also avoids dying. She may still be an heiress, but she’s got a lot to learn. The whole thing looks beautiful (and I try to say that through the eyes of someone who isn’t a Tomb Raider fangirl, but it’s really, really hard). Watch to get a look at how this game starts, and very possibly why you should never name a boat “Endurance.” I mean, come on. They kind of set themselves up for this one. Tomb Raider should release in the fall of 2012. Follow
