‘Dragon Quest X’ is more similar to an MMO than you’d think

Square Enix recently revealed additional information about the next installment in the RPG series Dragon Quest. The next game, appropriately titled Dragon Quest X, appears to have quite a few things in common with an MMO — except for the fact that it will be on the Wii (and Wii U). First off, you’ll have to be online to play everything after the first few hours. You don’t have to play with others, but you can’t do it all in an isolated fashion. And here’s the bigger thing — there will be additional charges for that online play. In the latest FAQ post over at Square Enix (translated by Andriasang), the company confirmed their intent to charge fees for online content. We’ll just hope that if this is an MMO, Square Enix has learned a lot since the release of Final Fantasy XIV, a game which still hasn’t actually been

Sony goes serious in its choice for a security officer

I remember our PSN-less month not-so-fondly. I’m pretty sure Sony feels the same way, because they’ve just hired someone who is pretty serious about security for their “chief information security officer.” Philip Reitinger, who previously served with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is Sony’s new hire. See, “security” was in the name! He previously directed the U.S. National Cyber Security Center. (Is anyone else surprised that we still use “cyber” to describe anything?) He’ll report to general counsel Nicole Seligman. “Certainly the network issue was a catalyst for the appointment,” a spokesman for Sony told Reuters. “We are looking to bolster our network security even further.” We can only hope that Reitinger does a good job.

First Look – Penny Arcade The Game: Gamers vs. Evil

I definitely got my video game on while at PAX, but I also made it a point to check out some tabletop gaming, and boy am I glad that I stopped off at the Cryptozoic booth. They were demoing their new Penny Arcade deck building game “Penny Arcade – The Game: Gamers vs. Evil”, and man, what a fun game! To start the game, you choose between different roles such as Gabe, Tycho and other familiar faces from the comic strip and then work to build up your deck. To do this, you use tokens to get merch cards or use power cards (cardboard tubes!) to make your deck more PvP based. The monsters you can snag for your deck are great, and can even infect the other players with the dreaded Pax Pox! You will of course need some good strategy, and it begins with picking the character you’re

    PAX Preview: Dead Island

Dead Island…  Zombies, buckets of blood, use everything you see on your path to kill the zombies, and a story to go with it.  What else do you want?  If you aren’t convinced already to get the game when it releases on September 6th, nothing I say will convince you.  What I can tell you is that I got a chance to play with the game at PAX Prime this year and my hunger for killing zombies grew instead of being sedated.  I had the pleasure of speaking with Doug Macleod, who is the project consultant for Dead Island and before we got to the questions and answers, the first things he said “Just aim for the head!”  I whack my paddle against the zombie, sending him down on the sand. “Now, get on top, crouch down and aim for the head!” he tells me, and I followed suit. As

Manga Review: 51 Ways to Save My Girlfriend by Furuya Usamaru

Earlier this year I came across a manga that is emotional, shocking, truthful and prophetic. It was considered as Science Fiction, until March 11, 2011 that is. Manga 51 Ways to Save my Girlfriend (Kanojo wo Mamoru 51 no Houhou ) has become a psychic premonition and of a slice of life in post quake Japan. This fictional earthquake story was written by FURUYA Usamaru back in 2006. The manga spares nothing and takes a look at the darkest sides of disaster. The main character is a guy who is looking for a job at Fuji TV headquarters in Odaiba. Known as a resort and tourist attraction the island of Odaiba is home to an Aquacity an enormous shopping mall, a high tech multi-plex cinema and a gourmet zone which is the largest in Japan. The major attractions of Odaiba are mentioned in the manga as the characters make their

So, the current Steam version of ‘Dead Island’ isn’t the finished one

Maybe today’s release date for Dead Island wasn’t enough to get the complete game up? Those who preloaded the game on Steam have found that there are several issues with the game, most of which seem to stem from the fact that numerous developer controls have been left in. Not only that, but if you actually get into the code, a lot of Xbox references have been left in. Big oops, I suppose? In any case, this problem should be over today, with Deep Silver staff member Gadwyn saying in the game’s forums that, “We deeply regret that it was not possible to make the final patched version of Dead Island available to players at launch in North America. We apologize for any issues you may have experienced while playing the game, the final patched version will be made available to North American players today.” The patch out today will

I hope you enjoy our reviews and please let us know what you think of PulpAngels! Courtney Crumrin Tales #2: The League of Ordinary Gentlemen is the sequel to “Portrait of the Warlock of a Young Man”. The press release talks about how The League of Ordinary Gentleman is the long awaited sequel and that is because the first novel came out in 2005. The book is out of print now, but The League of Ordinary Gentleman reads like it’s own story. I’m familiar with Courtney from other series where we follow her as a young girl. This series takes place in the past when her uncle Aloysius
