‘Syndicate’ trailer shows off co-op

I am really conflicted about this game after seeing the trailer. I like co-op play, especially if it can be done offline with out connecting to a network (though I doubt this is the case with EA here). Games like Crystal Chronicles and Golden Eye really got it right with 4 player co-op, but it's tricky to do .

However, I loved the original Syndicate games. Bullfrog and Peter Molyneux did some excellent work and the Syndicate world was dark, interesting, and brilliant. The game was lots of fun and a little ahead of its time with the open ended world where you could really shoot or manipulate a lot of the world (vehicles and people) and make your own ethical decisions. GTA wouldn't copy that for 4 years. The cyberpunk story was great as were the RPG elements and real time control.

This new game has me worried after seeing the trailer. I like the design, but it looks thin on plot and elements form the original which had a lot of different missions. I recognized a few vehicles, the trench coats, and of course Eurocorp, but its all clean and pretty. Hopefully that was only one of many locations. All you do in the trailer is shoot security guards and the boss battle against the guy with the gatling gun looked a little worrying. Also, there wasn't any indication of the cybernetic upgrade elements and a corporate overlord controlling the agents (npc or player).

All in all, I am happy to see along overdue remake. I am not convinced a FPS was the right design and it didn't hit the right level of nostalgia for the original world or convince me that the new one will be interesting in it's own right. I'll have to wait and see.

That looks pretty sweet. The more I see multiplayer capabilities evolve, the more excited I get about the future of gaming. I know 4 player co-op is nothing new (uh, Ninja Turtle arcade game! ;), but still, in a fast-faced shooter, the possibilities for fun and a new experience every time is through the roof. I love it.
