That time of year is upon us: the summer movie season! For four glorious months, movie goers can experience what film companies think are the best of the best. Summer is typically packed with the movies that everyone flocks to theatres to see and 2012 is no different. So, grab your large tub of popped kernals and your expensive boxed candy and get ready for what appears to be a summer full of fantastic flicks.
The first month of summer movies, May leads the charge with the highly anticipated movie The Avengers. Clearly this movie is the one to watch and has been heavily marketed for quite some time. Marvel and Disney have been cooking this movie up as each Marvel movie has come down to this epic blockbuster to include the likes of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and other Marvel characters we have seen throughout the films. Opening the first weekend of the movie season, The Avengers will release on May 4th.
Not to be overshadow by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, May also has other films worth seeing including the third installment of a hilarous, alien series. Men in Black 3, which releases on May 25th, brings back Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. It also introduces Josh Brolin, who plays a younger verison of Tommy Lee’s Agent K from the late 1960s. It has been several years (and one animated series) since Men in Black so it is great to see it returning to the big screen.
Also in May, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, pregnancy book adaptation What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and Sacha Burton Cohen’s new character The Dictator.
The Avengers, Prometheus, and The Dark Knight Rises will be huge films this summer
Opening on June 1st, Snow White and the Huntsman shows a darker side to the often Disneyfied tale of Snow White. Starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron, the second Snow White inspired film this year (the first being Mirror, Mirror with Julia Roberts) takes a medieval approach with lavish, epic battle scenes and dark, incredible creatures. Throw in an evil stepmother wanting to eat her stepdaughter’s beating heart and we’ve got a film that would make the Grimm Brother’s seriously happy.
Ridley Scott gives his Aliens fans something that have probably wanted for a while which is a “prequel” of sorts. Prometheus opens up on June 8th and is centered around a space faring crew that lands on a distant planet where, obviously, stuff goes down involving some extraterristial creatures. Questions that arise are whether or not the film will be inviting to those not fans of the original Alien movies and whether Charlize Theron can fill the big shoes of Sigourney Weaver.
June also brings us the movie adaption of book Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, a little sequel by the name G.I. Joe Retaliaton, and Pixar’s first heroine named Merida in Brave.
Swinging in at the beginning of July is The Amazing Spider-Man which is a rebooted movie of the webslinger after only five years since Spiderman 3. Now, we have a new director in Marc Webb and a new hero behind the mask as Andrew Garfield becomes Peter Parker and, of course, Spider-Man. Also digging deep into the comics for inspiration we have a new love interest then the more popular and well-know Mary Jane. Gwen Stacy (being played by Emma Stone) gets a chance with Peter’s heart in this film. Our villian: The Lizard. Marvel is truly going to have a great summer. The Amazing Spider-Man releases July the 3rd.
Thor, The Dictator, The Evil Queen, and Merida
Spider-man is not the only superhero taking over July. The Dark Knight Rises will be in theatres on July 20th and it is certainly on the must watch list. Although not as heavily marketed as the other superhero movies this summer, TDKR hardly needs to be. As the conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, the movie already has all the credentials it needs. Christian Bale returns as Batman with Anne Hathaway as the sexy Catwoman and Tom Hardy as the terriorist Bane. Many others from the previous films will be popping up such as Morgan Freeman. The trailers have been amazing and enough to make at Batfan excited for July.
Drug, action flick Savages, foul-mouthed teddy bear Ted and strange comedic tale Neighborhood Watch will also be dropping this July.
August winds down the summer and the blockbusters slow down. However, August is not to be forgotten in the film world especially with a film like Total Recall releasing on August third. A remake of Schwarzenegger’s early 90s film, Colin Ferrel takes on the role of Douglas Quaid. The movie has been said to have many differences from the original which is sure to make both worth watching as long as they are not nitpicked to pieces through comparisons. The trailer for the 2012 Total Recall is enough to rush to the theaters to check it out.
Also in August, The Expendables 2 will be out of the 17th. It is a sequel to the 2010 movie which seemed to be Sylvester Stallone’s love letter to action films. Expendables 2 will have more action then the first film. The film will even have Chuck Norris in it. Chuck. Norris. With plenty of explosions, gun fights, martial arts, and combat, this movie will be a great summer send-off into the fall season for the action movie fans.
The late Whitney Houston’s Sparkle, realistic love tale Celeste and Jesse Forever, and stop-motion animated Paranorman are also releasing this August.
Hopefully this guide gave you a taste of some of the bigger movies releasing this summer, but it’s not all action and superheroes. There are plenty of other films of all genres for a person to enjoy during the season. It is just a matter of finding what niche you fit into.
