Target announces some pricey Hunger Games merchandise

Maybe because the target audience of fans of the Hunger games is women/young girls, but Target is expecting Hunger Games fans to spend when it comes to their favorite franchise. The press release does have details about the Hunger Games DVD ($20.99)and Blu-Ray ($25.99). Both are available for preorder now at Target.com/HungerGames.

But because the movie is so popular they have additional merchandise you can purchase. Most of the collectibles shown on the Target site seem affordable and range from earrings to candle holders. But the press release mentions a few “rare” items that they must believe fans will pay for.

The “premium” items will be on the website on the day of the DVD release on August 18th. The keepsakes include: “14-carat gold replicas of heroine Katniss Everdeen’s famed Mockingjay pin (the story’s symbol of rebellion), with 100 available at $999 each; leather replicas of Katniss’ hunting jacket, with 100 available at $349 each; and “The Hunger Games” lithographs autographed by 10 top cast members including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, with 100 available for $699 each.” Each are available in limited number which makes them “collectible”.

“‘The Hunger Games’ franchise has truly captivated the nation. We’re proud to be part of this pop culture phenomenon and want to deepen Target guests’ engagement with the series through exciting product offerings and bonus video content,” said John Butcher, vice president of entertainment, Target. “Target is known for providing must-have merchandise at an unbeatable value, but we wanted to surprise our guests by taking it up a notch for ‘The Hunger Games’ and unveiling a prestige collection for devoted fans.”

I’m not certain the economy is that great yet that we are at a point where young girls have $999 to spend on a necklace. While these items are limited in quantity, even the collector in me, can’t justify that price. What are your thoughts?
