Shepard[‘s story] is dead. Long live Shepard.
In an interview with VG247, BioWare confirmed what they have been saying all along: Shepard’s story is over, and Shepard will not be part ofMass Effect 4. Well, if your Shepard died at the end ofMass Effect 3, then this most certainly would be the case regardless, (same would have happened if your Shepard died at the end ofMass Effect 2, which is possible), but at least you can play ME4 with a (mostly) clean conscience.
So what will Mass Effect 4 or whatever they’re going to call it feature? Fabrice Condominas, BioWare Montreal producer, had this to say:
This is really our starting point. Now the Mass Effect universe is vast, and very, very rich. So at this point in time, we don’t even know what kind of time frame we’re going to be in. All we’re doing is more gathering ideas from the teams, gathering feedback to see several things.”
So first, we don’t want to make ‘Shepard 2′, or Mass Effect 4 with like, ‘oh there’s no more Shepard but you’re a soldier in the universe’. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest.
I for one am quite pleased that BioWare is choosing to go this route and make something completely different. Even though I absolutely loved both of my Shepards (even my space jerk), I’m happy with how their stories ended, and I’m ready for something new in the Mass Effect universe.
