Weekly Roundup Episode 17 – The Live Edition

Hey there everyone! It’s time for a historical first that we pulled off on a whim – the first-ever Weekly Roundup Live Show, broadcasting on this Ustream channel. You could have actually seen us talking — if you were there. Trina and I think it went pretty well, but we won’t do it again unless you like it. So let us know! We will probably be back next week, though. (Also — be a dear and leave some iTunes reviews, will you? Need the .mp3? It’s right here.) On tap this week: The ESA’s charging California for their legal fees, mostly because California was too dumb to realize that the Supreme Court’s opinion wouldn’t be too much different from other courts’. (Sorry, but it’s true.) BioWare’s letting us choose a FemShep…and she looks like so many other heroines. Great? GamePro magazine is making the switch to quarterly. Stripgamer. It exists.

Is GameCrush too tame for you? Might be time to check out StripGamer instead

Let’s face it. A lot of female gamers weren’t too happy when the GameCrush beta launched last year. The site has gone through so many facelifts and changes between now and then, maybe as a response to that — the credits system changed, and it even looks like they’re trying to do away with cash payments for the most part, allowing you to exchange what you’ve earned for physical items, instead. I wonder how many people are willing to play just to exchange points for a USB drive? One thing has always remained — nudity is expressly forbidden in the Terms of Service. Now, I don’t have any numbers about how many PlayDates and customers actually stick to that, and no one ever will. The video feeds aren’t monitored. I can tell you from my own experience, however, that a lot of guys never really were that interested in reading

    Weekly Roundup Episode 16

It’s SDCC week, so we’re joined by fellow Angel Evy and we also get a recorded rundown of what Trina’s been up to so far at the show. Later, we talk about Capcom, Gameloft’s poor working conditions, unnecessary Xbox refreshes, Origin pre-order strangeness, and…I admit an addiction to Tiny Tower, because I am clearly a horrible person. Here’s the show (and you can subscribe on iTunes, or just download the mp3):

    Weekly Roundup Episode 15

Sorry about the delay, folks — I’ve got weekend brain, thanks to Harry Potter-induced melancholy. This week, our biweekly special guest, Summer from Fandomania, is back, and it’s inappropriate as usual. Also as usual, it’s all her fault. First, it’s what we’ve been playing, followed by the news: Sony Online Entertainment is charging for DCUO DLC, Netflix is charging more, PopCap’s got new owners, Sony’s “Welcome Back” worked in some sene and the 90s is coming back to television. Well, the 90s on Nickelodeon, anyway. Listen in the player below, or find us on iTunes! (And if you are a faithful listener, be a dear and review us?) As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. Be sure to take a listen to Blood Angels, our True Blood podcast. ALSO: We’ve got some new stuff coming up, but

    Weekly Roundup Episode 14

It’s time for another Weekly Roundup! This week, we have our first voicemail question (!) from @tyrone_hawk, about how to get his wife to enjoy playing first-person shooters, instead of just watching. Then it’s on to what we’ve been playing this week, the Gears of War 3 debacle, Civilization’s new Facebook offering, more on the Wii U, Sony’s PSN Pass…and the Mass Effect movie. Because they’re bringing it to San Diego Comic Con in some manner. Hope you enjoy this week’s show! As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. Be sure to take a listen to Blood Angels, our True Blood podcast. ALSO: We’ve got some new stuff coming up, but you’ll have to wait to hear more. If you want to contact us, you’ve got tons of options! Weekly Roundup Episode 13 (Please don’t be unlucky!)

Our special guest is back, yay! But Trina’s not with us, boo. She’s off doing Important Things, so I guess we can give her a pass. This week, it’s all about retro games, Supreme Court rulings, and unsavory working conditions. Well, that and some more stuff. (Because remember, there’s always more.) We hope you enjoy this week’s hilarity! Listen in the player below, or find us on iTunes. Relevant links are below the player. The Supreme Court is on our side, yay! (Also, graham crackers.) Leland Yee just won’t give up. (Dude, give up. Capcom 3DS titles are apparently single-play only. (Notice we didn’t say single-player.) Nintendo insists on breaking our hearts. (And keeping the thing they need in North America out of North America.) Team Bondi insists on breaking its employees. (This is why you might not actually want to be a game developer.) As always, we encourage you

Supreme Court is just not that into restricting minors’ access to violent games

It may be a cheesy headline, but really, it’s true. Today, the Supreme Court of the United States (hereafter referred to as SCOTUS, because that’s way easier) ruled that California’s law restricting the sales of violent video games to adults only was just plain unconstitutional under the First Amendment. So in the battle of Brown v. EMA, the Entertainment Merchants Association wins by a 7-2 vote, as celebrated on the front page of Steam like so: To read more on the case’s background, read our first few articles: a short introduction to it, my initial interpretation of the case and an interview with the ECA’s Jenn Mercurio, who added a little insight to the case’s purpose. The Court’s opinion was filed by Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who has typically sided with free speech and expression interests, so this…actually isn’t too surprising, given his conservative history on the Court. Also, he

    Weekly Roundup Episode 12

This week, we’ve got a special guest — Summer from Fandomania. (Also her dog, Arya.) We talk Team Fortress 2, Pottermore, video games as crimestoppers, LulzSec (even though we put a moratorium on it), store-exclusive DLC for Batman: Arkham City and more. (There’s always more.) Listen in the player below, or find us on iTunes. Where can we be seen next? Well, Trina’s going to a Nintendo event next week, so you can see her there. But! If you want to see her on a show, she’ll be on This Week In Video Games with Jessica Villareal on June 30. You can watch that live online, so that’s awesome. As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. Also be sure to take a listen to Blood Angels, our True Blood podcast. Weekly Roundup Episode 11

We’ve made it to episode 11! That’s something, for sure. AND you can still download us on iTunes! You should get on to that subscribing thing. Show notes follow: Let’s be honest. This week we talk a lot about Duke Nukem Forever and the resulting PR mess. And games we’re playing. And about *some people* getting special treatment from PR. It’s fun, really. I promise. We also reveal our scholarship winner as well as a brand new podcast. As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. It’s time to announce our National Computer Camp scholarship winner!

The choice was a hard one to make, let me tell you. We received essays on games ranging from BioShock 2 to Harvest Moon. Some girls wanted to add contextual minigames to Wizard 101. But as much as we wished we could give out multiple scholarships, just like Highlander, there can be only one. (Winner, that is.) GamingAngels staff chose Annapolis, Md.’s Sarah Bishop, 16, as the prize winner after reading her essay on improvements she would want to make in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. You can read her entry at the end of this post. Congratulations, Sarah! We hope you enjoy your time at Computer Camp. We also extend a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who entered the contest. I’m sure I speak for the rest of the staff when I say that I hope we can offer an opportunity like this again.   Here’s Sarah’s essay:   My
