He’s just an amazing entertainer. But not everyone can make it to a convention to see him live. Now you have a better chance and you should take it. J. J. Abrams to Direct Second Star Trek Movie
It’s official: J.J. Abrams has signed on for a second installment of the re-booted Star Trek franchise. IMDB still shows that there will be a 2012 release date, but given that they also show that the overall plot has not been settled, that seems unlikely to me, but who knows? Hollywood can move fast when there is money to be made. I know I said before that sequels make me nervous, but I still have high hopes for this one. The first J.J. Abrams installment was just so cool! I really enjoyed the way they hit all of the important touchpoints of the Star Trek universe, but still made it different. The cast was amazing, too. I could wish for a few more female stars, but I did like that they made Zoe Saldana’s Uhura intelligent and not just decorative. As far as plot goes, there is not a lot

First Hunger Games movie trailer
The first trailer for the Hunger Games movie was shown during the VMA awards this past Sunday: I am sorry, did I miss the part where they indicated in any way what the movie is about? I mean, sure, Katniss looks pretty cool, in a generic, athletic sort of way, but anyone not familiar with the books could be forgiven for thinking this movie is about some kind of gymnastics or sporting demonstration, not a fight to the death to feed all of the people in the teenage competitors’ districts. “All they want is a good show”? That seems like a pretty innocuous way to describe a bloodsport to me. What do you think? Are you looking forward to this movie? If you haven’t read the books, does this trailer appeal to you at all?

Ridley Scott signs on for Blade Runner sequel
Alcon Entertainment secured the rights to make any Blade Runner prequels or sequels this spring, and now they have signed on Ridley Scott to direct the new film. The storyline has not been set yet, and indeed, no scriptwriter has been hired. However, producer Andrew Kosove has stated that this will not be a remake of the original. “This is arguably the greatest science fiction movie ever made and we’re not remaking it,” he said. “It’s a prequel or a sequel.” I would agree that that movie doesn’t need to be remade, but I would think the fact that their licensing agreement specifically excludes remaking the original story has something to do with that decision as well. Scott is also revisiting the Alien universe with the upcoming Prometheus, due out next June. I have mixed feelings about all this. Is he revisiting his most popular movie universes because he has

Star Wars inspired art at Hold Up Art
It’s hard to deny the impact that Star Wars has in Pop Culture. The 1977 film, and all the following films in the franchise have allowed generations of people to enjoy and fall in love with the Star Wars Universe. Because of that, it’s not hard to believe that artists are inspired by Star Wars too. Art for a Galaxy Far Far Away will be held at Hold Up Art from August 20 through September 5, 2011. Professional illustrator and painter Randy Martinez and Denise Vasquez will be showing their Star Wars-inspired works. Denise has a background in custom vinyl toys and Randy has been working in the Star Wars Universe for a very long time. Here is the location for the exhibit: Hold Up Art 358 E. Shatner leads us in the longest KHANNN ever
At SDCC I was fortunate enough to get a seat at The Captain’s panel. The Captains is a new documentary that William Shatner created where he had off the cuff moments with all the former and current captains in Star Trek. The concept is awesome and I encourage everyone to watch. Shatner is always hilarious to watch. Below is a trailer for the documentary…but first… During the panel Shatner had the entire room participate in the longest KHAANNNN ever recorded. Well I recorded it at least, to share with you!

A First Look at the New Superman
Warner Bros. has released the first official image of Henry Cavill as the new Superman in the upcoming Man of Steel (due out June 14, 2013), and it is pretty awesome. This was released before an unofficial shot got out from the set, so Warner Bros. gets to set the expectation and the mood. And what a mood it is–dark and gritty in the setting, but also with a much more polished, Wall Street-ready looking Superman. The full image, including a larger, high resolution version can be seen at /Film’s site. We have a long wait before the film actually comes out, but I am getting kind of excited about it now, especially since I see that Amy Adams will be playing Lois Lane. She plays a lot of strong, interesting characters, which is right for Lois. She is supposed to be an experienced journalist that Clark wants to impress,

Cowboys and Aliens
When I first heard that there was going to be a movie called ‘Cowboys and Aliens’, I was hooked. How could a movie with a name like that fail to be awesome? I was not deterred by the memory of ‘Snakes on a Plane’, because while the comedic value of the title was obvious, the concept hardly seemed enough to hang a whole movie on; therefore, it wasn’t a surprise when the movie failed to live up to all the hype (not that I saw it–I hate snakes–but that is what I heard). But ‘Cowboys and Aliens’? It would have cowboys, *and* aliens! What’s not to like? Then, I found out the three leads would be Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, and Daniel Craig would take off his shirt AND wear chaps, and I was all there. And THEN, I heard the Jon Favreau interview on NPR, where he
