Review – Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes

Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes Publisher: Dark Horse Writer: Mary M. Talbot Artist: Bryan Talbot Genre: Non-Fiction Publication Date: February 08, 2012 Format: Full Color, 96 pages, Hardcover, 6″ x 8 1/2″ Price: $14.99 The story of two coming-of-age narratives of Lucia Joyce (daughter of James Joyce) and Mary Talbot (author and daughter of Joycean scholar James S. Atherton), Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes is equal parts personal history and biography. Weaving through gender and social expectations, personal tragedies and stifled ambitions, the stories of Lucia and Mary are played out against two distinct historical backgrounds in an intensely honest way, in both written and visual storytelling ways. There’s a lot of heavy stuff going on in this graphic novel, and I’m not sure I can really talk about it. For one, I don’t think I’m fully equipped to discuss the gender and social expectations and politics the Talbots address

Review of Diary of a Mad Fat Girl

At first I was reluctant to read Diary of a Mad Fat Girl. I’m a visual person and the cover did not scream anger or quite honestly a fat girl. There was a disconnect and I was worried about the quality of the story. But I found when I started to read Diary of a Mad Fat Girl, a novel by Stephanie McAfee I couldn’t put it down. My advice is rip the cover off and dive right in. Diary of a Mad Fat Girl follows Ace and her close friends Lilly and Chloe. The book covers topics that our generation are very familiar with in a combination of both humor and seriousness. Ace lost both her parents and has a horrible boss and on top of all that, her best friend flaked on her for a Spring Break trip. Through Ace’s humor we weave through all the characters hardships

Dark Horse Graphic Novels now available on Nook

It’s confusing to know whether or not your comics are available on a particular e-reader or tablet. Dark Horse sent us a press release stating that Dark Horse Graphic Novels will now be in the Nook Comics store. Not just a few, but over 100 titles are featured including Mass Effect, Hellboy, Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity, Sin City and more. “Making our content available on new platforms outside of the Apple iOS is an incredibly exciting proposition,” said Matt Parkinson, Dark Horse’s senior director of Marketing. “As we move into new areas and new devices, we look forward to the opportunity to find new readers. I can’t think of a better partner than Barnes & Noble, the leading retailer of digital content and media and the folks behind the number-one chain of bookstores in the country.” More titles will be added to the Nook store every month.

Not a Book Review – Mass Effect: Deception

Seriously, this is NOT a book review for Mass Effect: Deception, as I never finished the book. More importantly, I never will, and I want both the money I spent as well as the time I spent reading the drivel back. Post haste. When I received the book, I was already aware of the long, excruciating list of fan complaints regarding the lore inaccuracies and typos strewn throughout. Since the author, William C. Dietz, is a notable sci-fi author, I decided to give it a chance anyway. The typos are the publisher’s fault anyway, and as for lore inaccuracies…I saw nothing on the list that was a deal breaker. If the story is good, then by all means, consider me a happy Mass Effect fangirl. After seven chapters, I had to toss in the towel. I couldn’t subject myself to such horrible writing any longer. It’s Dan Brown horrible. But

    Review – Prototype 2: The Anchor #1

Publisher: Dark Horse Digital Release Date: February 15, 2012 Writer: Dan Jolley Artist: Paco Diaz Colorist: Michael Atiyeh Cover Artist: Paco Diaz Price: $0.99 Age range: 16+ Dan Jolley (writer of Prototype 2) teams up with Dark Horse Digital to create a new, digital-exclusive series (that will be available in hardcopy trade) that fills in the gap between Prototype and Prototype 2. Three two-part stories altogether, The Anchor follows Alex Mercer one year after he released the Blacklight virus on New York City as he travels the world searching for a reason to care about humanity. Up until the point of this story, it seems he’s just given more reasons to hate humanity. In the wilds of the the far north, he might have found something worth fighting for in the form of a kind old man and his daughter. I’ve never played Prototype. When I was given this title to review, I was worried that

Review – Dragon Age: The Silent Grove #1

Publisher: Dark Horse Digital Release Date: February 22, 2012 Writers: Alexander Freed (script), David Gaider (story) Artist: Chad Hardin Colorist: Michael Atiyeh Cover Artist: Anthony Palumbo Genres: Video Games, Fantasy Price: $0.99 Straight from David Gaider, the lead writer of BioWare’s Dragon Age games, Dragon Age: The Silent Grove is an original six-part story that is available exclusively through Dark Horse Digital (with the trade being available hardcopy at the end of the story’s single issue run). King Alistair Therein is investigating a rumor big and personal enough to investigate it himself. Mercenaries Isabela and Varric join him on his dangerous quest to Antiva “to learn the truth about his kingdom and his own reign”. In the description for this comic on the Dark Horse site, it states that this series will be “an essential addition to the Dragon Age canon”, so I don’t think it’s going too far out on a limb to assume this was created with the already established Dragon

Review – Gears of War: Jacinto’s Remnant

Jacinto’s Remnant by Karen Traviss picks up immediately after the second Gears of War game, with the sinking of humanity’s last stronghold: Jacinto. When I say immediately, I can’t emphasize it enough. Remember the final cut scene where Delta Squad are rescued by a couple of Ravens and Marcus starts screaming for Anya? The book begins at this scene. Now that the Locust tunnels have been flooded and the Locust are gone for good (insert all-knowing maniacal laughter here), the Gears and the surviving people of Jacinto suddenly have a new war to fight: survival. After nearly freezing to death in an abandoned fort, the COG relocates to an island base, one that was untouched during the Hammer of Dawn strikes and never once saw a Locust. As such, the COG citizens of the island have lived in a very happy utopia, where the only thing they fear is the occasional Stranded

“Before Watchmen” Officially Announced by DC Entertainment

DC Entertainment has officially announced that this summer they will publish their highly controversial (in the comic book world) 7-title, 34 issue prequel mini-series for the bestselling graphic novel of all time, WATCHMEN. Each of the seven titles will be inter-connected and will be issued under the collective banner BEFORE WATCHMEN. “It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original.” Despite being able to debate whether or not the characters from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic are actually in need of being a part of “new stories”, DC has wrangled together a pretty impressive

Review – Gears of War: Aspho Fields

No one can say that the first Gears of War game had a decent story, or even really any story other than following a really bad 36 hours of four men’s lives.  The second game had a little bit more of a story, but not much, and the third game, well, I’ve already raved about how great of a story that one had compared to the first two. The reason why is all thanks to Karen Traviss, the author of the Gears of War novels, who was snatched up to write the story for Gears of War 3–and with good reason. While reading these books, you would think that she was part of the Gears universe from the get-go with the way she masters the Sera universe. (If only the first two games were as intriguing and well written as these books.) However, since Traviss was allowed to incorporate the world she
