Image Comics Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Expo
With so much DC and Marvel talk, most people that are not avid comic fans seem to forget about a little gem called Image Comics. Image is a wonderful publisher as it allows creators to publish their own work and material without giving up copyrights to their characters. Some very popular works that are published by Image include The Walking Dead, Spawn, Invincible, and Morning Glories. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publisher, a 3-day convention is being held on February 24-26 at the Oakland Convention Center in Oakland, California. Robert Kirkman, Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino, all Image partners, will be the guests of honor, with other special guests include the founders of Image, Rob Liefeld, and Whilce Portacio. Creators of some of the comics will also be in attendance. “IMAGE EXPO isn’t just about Image Comics, it’s a celebration of independent creativity in comics. The

Dark Horse to publish Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Alabaster
Last week we showcased the image above wondering what Dark Horse and Caitlin R. Kiernan were up to. The beautiful artwork is the cover of the upcoming Alabaster. Alabaster is based on Caitlin’s Dancy Flammarion stories. In the series Dancy has only known a life of killing monsters. Alabaster is not just a re-telling of the story but actually a re-imagining of it. Alabaster will first show up in Dark Horse Presents #9 (on sale February 22, 2012). After that, it will be a five issue mini-series, Alabaster: Wolves. Alabaster has artwork by Eisner Award–nominated artist Steve Lieber and cover art by Greg Ruth. We’re looking forward to seeing the upcoming Dark Horse Presents sneak peek!

Review: Footprints #1
Big Foot. Yeti. The Loch Ness Monster. What do all of these things have in common? Well, they are mysterious creatures whose existence has not one hundred percent been proven, but still have tons of loyal believers across the world. They offer a sense of wonder and mystery in the world at large. Footprints takes these cryptids and puts them in a noir setting as they, along with the Jersey Devil and the giant shark Megalodon, set out to solve the murder of BigFoot’s brother. The first aspect of Footprints that drew me in was the beautiful black and white art because, lets face it, if you are going to do a detective comic then black and white is the way to go. The detail in the art is incredible and really gives a sense of a gritty mystery world. The cryptids are a part of this world, fitting perfectly from their speech and demeanor. Speaking

Holy Tantrum, Batman! Barnes and Nobles Removing DC Comics
I casually strolled into a Barnes and Nobles this past weekend in search of Batman and Robin Vol 2. Upon finding the graphic novel/manga section of this particular B&N, I noticed a lack in all things DC related. There was about one shelf still containing what once was a great selection of decent DC graphic novels for both old and new fans. The very popular Batman comic The Killing Joke still graced the shelves in this store, but other popular comics had already been removed. Who knows how long Killing Joke and the other DC graphic novel survivors will stay on the shelves. In something that can only be described as a huge tantrum, Barnes and Nobles will be removing 100 DC graphic novels from their shelves. Some of these novels include the classic Watchmen, the popular Blackest Night, several Batman titles, V for Vendetta, etc. The removal is in response to the

DC asks what you think of the new 52
DC wants to know what you think of the new 52. Or at least appear like they care. DC has created a survey that is open from now until Friday, October 7. Nielsen will be conducting the survey online and in person. The reason behind the New 52 was stated by DC as the following: Their goal was to expand the market by appealing to new/lapsed readers. The DCSurvey can be taken here. DC states that the findings will be released at some point early next year. The survey is pretty long, but does seem to want to know more about if you purchased and what you purchased. With a couple of text areas to explain what you really feel about the New 52. I do encourage you to voice your opinions. No matter where on the fence you are about the New 52. They need to hear from a

Openly Gay Teen Superhero to join “Teen Titans”
Brett Booth has recently announced via his blog that an openly gay, Mexican teen named Miguel Jose Barragan (superhero name is ‘Bunker’) will be in the relaunched Teen Titans starting with issue number three. A little background on the character: “He was raised in a very small Mexican village called El Chilar. He was very loved by his family and the village as well — and they were as accepting of his homosexuality as they were to his super powers when they first manifested. To that end he grew up in an angst-free environment. He was born out of the closet and so he has a very refreshing outlook on life,” said Scott Lobdell. “Bunker’s homosexuality is a part of him. The character was created and designed in a way so that readers know he is gay once they see him. “I don’t think we even mention that he’s gay,” Booth

Support the CBLDF with Trading Cards
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a nonprofit set up to protect the first amendment rights of the comic book community–retailers, creators, publishers, librarians, and readers. Although I may find some of the cases they work on disturbing, I do agree that you can’t pick and choose what to defend if you believe in free speech, as Neil Gaiman says much more eloquently than I could. I am just glad that there are other people out there who are willing to defend free speech, even when they don’t like the speech in question, so that I don’t have to do it. But I can help support the work that the CBLDF does, and I can do it with trading cards. Cryptozoic Entertainment is releasing Liberty Cards, a set of trading cards showcasing some of the historic legal battles surrounding comic books from the 1950s to present day. There will be

Gail Simone Tweet Memes
It is possible that @GailSimone is my favorite person that I follow on Twitter. She’s just so much fun! Case in point, two hashtags she recently started. The first, #comicbookconspiracytheorys / #comicbookconspiracytheories, started with this tweet: @GailSimone: Dear conspiracy theorists, no, DC did not deliberately under print the new 52. The books got overprints and are selling out anyway. After that, things just got silly. Some of the best tweets: @Samlsacke: @GailSimone crisis on infinite earths happened because reagenomics demanded one earth #comicbookconspiricytheorys @GailSimone: If you look closely, you can see a pre-natal Jim Lee on the Zapruder film. #comicbookconspiricytheorys @T_Lawson: @GailSimone Barbara Gordon’s return as Batgirl is a direct result of passing Obamacare. #comicbookconspiracytheories @ZackCantrell: @GailSimone something something Free Masons, Thomas Jefferson, Knights Templar, New 52, something something #comicbookconspiracytheories @jester1436: @GailSimone You’re really a very sophisticated writing robot created by the men at DC to fill a quota. #comicbookconspiricytheories
