Why? Because of our so-called Attorney-General who is the only political figure holding Australia back from using an R18+ rating.
Michael Atkinson is using his position to impose his view that if we were to allow an R18+ rating into our classifications system, then it would be paving the way for "depraved sex" and other more adult content in our games. (Depraved means corrupt, wicked, or perverted. Just so you know.)
So instead of allowing us to choose for ourselves he's made the choice for us. While I think this is completely ridiculous, I do understand what he means. However I don't think he understands what he is essentially doing. In making this decision I believe that instead of legalising these items, people will import them anyway. So while I understand, I am completely not in agreement. AT all.
I also believe that if we had this rating that it would make parents open their eyes a little more when making their gift purchases. Some of the content in these games that are MA15+ definitely are not suitable for 15 year olds (Any of the GTA games if you want an example – I definitely don't want my kids to learn how to hijack a car or shoot a Uzi). Kids are going to find a way around it regardless of what rating you use, but it's up to parents to look after their children and help them make the right choices – not have somebody do it for them. That's why I think if this rating was used then parents could make the decision of allowing it to be bought or not. Or confiscate it if little Mickey brings it into the house thinking Mum or Dad won't find it.
Furthermore, I believe that our rating system needs an upheaval as to who does the classifying and what gets classified in ANY entertainment medium: Games, DVDs and so on. They don't seem to be doing a proper job in my opinion. As the article I'm about to show you says, MW2 got a 17+ in the US and a 18+ in the UK. MA15+ in Australia. Hmm, yeah that makes sense. /sarcasm.
If you want to see why I have gotten so upset, read this article (http://www.news.com.au/technol….._newspulse) and then read his 6 page letter to a sensible human being.
I could go on and on, but I needed to vent a little. It makes me want to do something stupid like putting some of my angel dirt in a paper bag, lighting it on fire and sticking it on his front doorstep a la Billy Madison (An early Adam Sandler movie). Instead I'm just mad as anything. Hopefully the people in Croydon wake up to themselves and get rid of this idiot at the elections in March. I also hear his kids aren't exactly approving of his stand either. Which makes me lol.

Would it help if Aussie gamers got together and wrote/sent petitions out?

I think that the Aussie gamers should definitely ban together on this and petition against this. So long as parents do some research on the games that their kids want to play and explain things to them then things would be okay. Honestly this kind of censorship will only make kids want to disobey more and try to get copies of the more mature games illegally. Not to mention it'll make things more difficult for game developers trying to get their games out to consumers.

I believe there have been petitions setup already online, and there is even a political party in Croydon called "Gamers for Croydon" (or something similar). I will go on a search and sign all of them, and I will also post the links for my Aussie compatriates.
It would be good to see the gamers of Australia band together and try to vocalise our objection somehow. I even thought of a demonstration, but it doesn't personally do me any good when I can't storm his office – it's in another state. Strength in numbers… it may even help to band together with other websites… Just a thought.
Not only are they making it hard for devs, but the retailers are also in the line of fire too. Some shop owners (like the awesome people at my GameTraders store) wouldn't sell something like GTA to a 15 year old even if the rating said it was right for that age group, but if an unwitting parent bought it and then found out down the track that their child is playing a game that isn't appropriate for them then the blame shifts from the parent to the retailer for allowing the sale.
And also butchering games so that they will fit into a classification rating suitable enough is something else I abhor. L4D2 is the example that comes to my mind. While my US friends get to play L4D2 with the content the way it was developed, Australians have to play a tailored version of the game so it is acceptable for sale here without certain gory details.
As you can see, I'm pretty steamed. So much so that I'm surprised I'm not fogging up my computer screen.

This makes me insanely mad – that and my last posting didn't go through so I'm extra mad! So with slightly less agro.
Listen to this segment from ABC radio with Atkinson from Friday night who is his usual d-bag self. He's in a labour seat in a very very strong labour electorate and is very sure he's not going to get voted out (so I have to wait another 20-30 years for him to kick it?) Should mention also that It's Atkinson then someone from Gamers4Croydon.

His argument is invalid either way. In this point in time and history it's really rather ridiculous.
Gamers 4 Croydon - http://www.gamers4croydon.org/
Also there is a serious petition in Queensland for a R18+ for them as a state so if there are any QLD residents here or friends/family of someone with a QLD address PLEASE GET BEHIND THIS! I unfortunately don't live in QLD XD

I'm so so so frickin' mad. COME ON AUSTRALIA POST, GET ME MY REGION FREE L4D2 THIS WEEK!

I have to admit it, and sadly alot of other people will do it to, online petitions aren't going to help anything. If you look at some of the comments made on some petitions, they're childish and only helping Atkinson solidify his point. Not that I'm saying to not try, but to try and convince a person who rides a push bike and likes to respond to emails via snail mail to change his outdated veiws on video games via the internet, it just isn't going to have the same affect. He seems to be very much sticking to his own guns on this.
I just think he should explain why he first agreed to, then blocked, a nationwide discussion paper on the subject of a R rating.
Atkinsons veiws are, to me, old fashioned. I think everyone will agree that it is the parents job to monitor what their children play and watch. The PS3, 360, Wii and I believe Windows 7, all have parental controls installed in them so that certain material can't be used without a parental lock. I know that my aunty has the parental lock on all of her kids consoles (I should know, I set it up for her) and that she monitors what games the kids buy and borrow from their friends. She accepts the fact that she has to have a part in this kind of area, not like other people I know.
Without the rating, it makes it easier for parents to NOT take on the parental role when it comes to interactive media.
In regards to L4D 2 though, I'm more than shitted off about the major changes between the original version and the "babyfied" version of the game. There are many videos out on youtube that show the differences, and, as I think I said to Naomi when she was over, it made me depressed to know that we have to put up with this kind of over censorship because we are the ONLY western country without an R18 rating.
It seems that us Aussies are so desperate to be in the "normal crowd" that we are willing to import and hack games in order to play them the way they were meant to be played. I'll admit, I will be buying the game from Steam, but, I may have to change my region and use a download mirror, get someone to gift it to me or use the ever so popular "510" hack (which basically unlocks the censorship by changing a number in two files. And yes, I tried it on the demo, and it worked a treat).
I think getting the knowledge out to those who don't understand the issue at hand is one of the most important things we need to do but, it doesn't mean those who make the decisions know what they are talking about in the first place. (Via Q&A from ABC).

A+ comment about the petitions – they have been around for years and have done a whole lot of nothing so far.

^ LMAO!! I know right! So freaking stupid. We can have porn but not a thousand guns blazing.
If I could I would go on Sunrise and talk about it from my POV. If I could.
If you hear of any demonstrations or the like, let me know. I'd like to be involved somehow, or at least keep up with the situation.
It's ridiculous. I can't think of any other way to politely describe it.

I was reading on Kotaku from their Australian writer that the problem is one official in particular who pretty much won't budge on creating a M or 18+ rating. Really interesting because that just seems like such a foolish thing to be a hold out on.

Well This is just the tip of the ice berg, theres a whole bigger picture going on. They want Mass Censorship in australia where all forms of media is controlled, Video games just seems to be at the forfront because if they pass R18+ it a major loss for those invested parties. The Government is considering introducing control over Interenet just like china they watch an moderate all the things you view. if history serves us right either result wont benifit any off us

@Mr D – That's true. And I may never be able to post on GA again if they filter my interwebs.
@Trina – The Kotaku writer is right, and it's this guy Atkinson who is the one in it's way (hence the rant and steam).
It just seems completely incomprehensible as to why they think it's a bad thing to have this rating for games when we have instigated this rating for movies and other media.
It kindof makes me hope that the minute I win the lottery I will be moving to a country where I can make my own choices and not have limited restrictions put on my entertainment choices. As much as I love our country and all.
