Star Trek Online is out of beta.  I really enjoy it!  I try to get in a couple of hours a day when ever I possibly can.  It has taken all of my gaming time from my Wii and XBOX 360.

@MGS: Try private servers of games, they're free.

What do you mean private servers are free?  Let's say I want to try WOW.  Does that mean I can play it for free on a private server?  What MMOs should I play (for a beginner) if that's not the case?

My girlfriend and I play WoW together. We like it a lot. It's worth the monthly fees to us to play on the normal servers. I don't foresee us playing it forever though. Maybe another year or so. The new expansion looks like it will be good.

The thing with private servers is that they're not maintained as well as the official ones, not to mention companies like Blizzard have been cracking down on private servers and they're being taken down a lot more. They're also very glitchy. Honestly it's more worth it to just pay the monthly fee, especially if you really enjoy the game.

Ah, see, I didn't even know they were glitchy. I'm glad I didn't spend too much of my time looking into them. I considered it.

Honestly, I kinda feel like if $13/month is too much for you to spend on a video game, then you shouldn't be playing the game to begin with. Go make some money! Or at least play a game with no monthly fee, heh. :D

And there's may free to play MMOs. If you want to go for some of the flashier ones, most of them do offer free one week trials so you can try the game, and if you really like it then you can play it. That's how I got sucked into WoW. I was really impressed with the game, loved the characters and the story so decided to begin paying to play :)

I played Dark Age of Camelot off and on for 5 years, about 2-3 of those years I played almost every waking hour.. I think my last /played (hours you've spent logged on) on my main was about 130-140 days.. Yell and that's just on 1 toon.

I still love it and I met quite a lot of great people through it, but now even though I feel that it had the best PvP for any RPG out there, it's just getting a little old and possibly the only way to breathe some life to it is to remake it and release a "DAoC2", too much of it has been bypassed by much newer and better ideas (a small example is the mailing system in other games is non-existant in DAoC).

I played WoW a little and WAR I played for a few months as well, but nothing really compared.

I used to be almost obsessively into Guild Wars, but have abandoned it due to a lack of people to play with. Cry But I really want to gear up and get some things done before GW2 launches so I'm looking for a new, more active, and friendly guild to get involved with. Eventually I would like to start an all female competitive PvP team, and maybe play under a clan like PMS.

I did the Aion closed and open beta and LOVED IT. Bought the Limited Collector's Edition and everything. But I promised that I wouldn't install or play it until I found my new career opportunity because it's the only way I can justify a subscription based game. Several people have tried to get me into WoW, but after watching them play it doesn't look like fun! It looks like work, and I'm staunchly of the anti-grind mentality. I like the story lines, characters, art, & lore of a game the journey means more than the destination. I enjoy Guild Wars because it's not about being the highest level, but learning the game mechanics and skills to become a better player. And there's so much to do and explore that it just never gets boring to me.

MMOs. Oh dear. Time sink. I don't play too many of these anymore.

But when I do, I play Star Trek: Online. I'm looking forward to Trion's new MMO lineup (End of Nations and Rift: Planes of Telara) as well as The Old Republic and Fallout Online. I've done my time in WoW, Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, Ragnarok Online (buahaha – old school), and Champions. Soooo… I'm a recovering junkie.

Does anyone else play ST:O?

I've been meaning to check out ST:O. Was raised a Trekkie so it seems right up my alley. Though I'm also looking forward to Old Republic ;)

I'll send you a friend code for ST:O! It's a short demo of the game but it'll give you a taste.

I used to be a huge Everquest player, then I cancelled to save money. I recently went back but it seems like not many people are playing it these days. I also tried Dungeons and Dragons online; unfortunately, that game is more geared for groups. It's hard to solo. I played Guild Wars for awhile because it was free and I tried WoW but wasn't too impressed; however, I'm excited about the new expansion with the wolf character. So we'll see what happens.

It's too bad EQ has gone down hill. It was a really great game.

@randysmolly I play on Stormscale with my mains, but maybe we can pick one of our realms to play together on :)

@JCSWW I kept forgetting to sign up for the beta for STO!! :( How is it? I have that and Aion to try on my list.

Sorry for not replying sooner!  The only way I can get the box up to reply to anything is to put my browser into compatibility mode (IE9).  Start Trek Online has come a very long way in the almost year it has been out.  It was a great game at launch, has won a few awards this year for it's gameplay, and continues to grow and get better.  Besides free updates (referred to as Seasons by Cryptic), there are also Feature Episodes that come out over 5 weeks periods that offer special rewards and such.  The C-Store slowly offers up more uniforms for small costs, some ships, special items, etc where the costs vary.  If you haven't gotten around to trying out the game yet, just PM me your e=mail and I'll send you off a friend invite code that will allow you to get a few free days in if you'd like?  For anyone else playing, my handle in the STO Forums and in-game is JCSWW as well.

I agree about Guild Wars and I miss it. It had character and good players. I never liked WoW either.

Just to let everyone know, Cryptic's Champions Online goes Free to Play on January 25th.  It might be worth checking out considering the price is right.

I've been playing Lord of the Rings Online lately, and the Rift beta. I love LotRO (okay, I really love Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and Turbine did a VERY good job of translating it into an MMO) but Rift is also starting to make me sit up and take notice. Not so much that it's anything terribly new and innovative (the MMORPG genre is so derivative anyway), but it's very polished and solid and fun.

Before that I played WoW for years… since the original open beta. I love the Warcraft universe and I feel like I know that game like the back of my hand, but at the same time I kind of felt that it was time to try other MMOs. I'm really looking forward to Guild Wars 2, that one seems to be shaping up really nicely.

Currently I'm playing City of Heroes/City of Villains. My hero is MANICORN and my villain is Doctor Drama Llama.

I used to play D&D Online. It's still a great game…I just kind of drifted away from it. There, I had Lusii in the Sky and Tinkerblood the halfling barbarian.

wow is really the only one i play, though i've tried runes of magic and lotro. liked them both but just couldn't get into them, nor did i feel like i could manage another mmo lol. i have been looking at dc universe online, but again with the said 2nd mmo. however, i will set all notions aside for when the old republic is released. i tried galaxies a couple of times but it was before i kind of really got into trying out mmo games. i thought about getting back into it but i'd rather wait for that one because Surprised
