See the story on Slashdot
I run a 100+ member guild on WoW. We're like a huge family, even down to the bickering. Really, all I ever wanted to do was have my own mini-mafia. I guess I wasn’t too far off, at least as far as these researchers are concerned.

Yea my WoW guild is such a gang. With our banter towards each other and helping out alts and newbies when we can… yep. Total gang. *rolls eyes*

It's totally not saying we're gangs, it's just looking into the social-dynamic that causes groups like guilds and gangs to form, and the similarities thereof. It's a pretty sciencey article, if you don't mind the soft sciences too much.

LOL @ Maverick
And I can see where it's on the more sciency side. I went back and read the full thing (only had time to glance over it at first) and it's pretty interesting. However, I can only see this being taken the wrong way by people who have already blacklisted WoW as a relationship/life destroyer.

Oh, I'm right there with you, I've already heard quite a lot of arguments about it. As far as it goes, though, I think I'm the postergirl for it not being a relationship/life breaker all the time. One of the things that keeps my boyfriend and I together is the WoW time. It's silly, but it works. And both of us still have a pretty active social life (We do darn well as far as nerds are concerned!)

See my boy doesn't want to play WoW but I manage to get in WoW time and time spent with him. I also have a pretty active social life. This just means I can't be a hardcore raider, and to be quite honest I wouldn't want to be that. Then WoW is more like a job, and I want to play it for the fun of it.
I hate that people have to generalize things based on a few instances. Not everyone is going to behave the same way with things.
