Naoki Urasawa is known to most as the creator of the “Monster” anime series, and the “20th Century Boys” manga. And Tezuka Osamu is probably mostly known for his series “Astroboy”. What happens when the talents of both are combined? How about “PLUTO: URASAWA × TEZUKA”?

The manga is a reinterpretation by Urasawa of Tezuka’s work, and the final volume in the 8 part series is set for release on April 6th 2010. The story involves robots and humans co-existing, and there is something after the 7 great robots of the world. Robot detective Gesicht is assigned to investigate the case, soon finding out he himself is also a target.

In the last volume, Atom is back and equipped with the answers to the unsolved mysteries involving Pluto, Bora and more. He’s prepared to put this knowledge and the memory of his fallen friends (Gesicht, Mont Blanc, North No. 2, Brando, Hercules and Epsilon) into action in a final battle to save the Earth!

PLUTO: URASAWA × TEZUKA has been rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens and is expected to cost $12.99US or $16.99 CAN. For more info visit www.viz.com.

If you remember, one of our recommendations from the Turning Japanese Holiday Guide was the 20th Century Boys films. And at the time I don’t remember finding an official release date for film #2, but we now have word from VIZ Pictures of one!

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, the creator is Naoki Urusawa who is responsible for the MONSTER series and the YALSA list mention PLUTO. The 20th Century Boys films are based on the 24 volume manga series that are highly popular in Japan, having sold over 20 million copies. The film is directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, who has made commercials and music videos for Nihon Television and is also director of Happily Ever After (available from VIZ).

Still not sure? OK, I’ll let you know the storyline:

The story began in 1969 when a young boy named Kenji and his friends write “The Book of Prophecy” in which they write about a future where they fight against an evil organization trying to takeover the world and bring about doomsday. Years later in 1997, a mysterious cult being led by a man only known as “Friend” emerges and begins to gain strong influence over society. A series of catastrophic events begin to occur mirroring the prophecies made up by the young Kenji and the greatest fear is the climax of “The Book” becoming a reality; December 31st, 2000, a terrifying giant virus-spreading robot will attack the entire city of Tokyo leading to the end of mankind. The only people who know about “The Book” are Kenji and his childhood friends. Who is “Friend”? Will Kenji and his friends be able to save mankind and live to see the 21st Century?

In 20TH CENTURY BOYS 2: THE LAST HOPE it is 2015, and “Friend” rules a disturbing new world. Kenji has been missing since the Bloody New Year’s Eve of 2000, and his niece Kanna is now in high school. Her history textbook contains a fabricated story about Kenji and his friends being the terrorists behind the horrific events of 2000. Kanna, knowing the truth, openly resents this, and as a result she is marked as a problem child by her teacher and sent to the Friend Land program because of her anti-Friend behavior. Friend Land is a facility where people with rebellious behavior are re-educated. As the program begins, Kanna and her classmate Kyoko Koizumi achieve high marks and are sent to the advanced program called the Bonus Stage, where they find themselves in a virtual reconstruction of 1971, when Kenji and his friends were kids. There, each of the girls learns crucial secrets about “Friend.”

The surviving secret base members have been separated since Bloody New Year’s Eve but each has spent the last 15 years in various activities opposing Friend and his regime. As Kenji’s friends all try to find out the truth about Friend, they discover the shocking existence of The New Book of Prophecy, the sequel to The Book of Prophecy. The New Book describes an event: In 2015, at a church in Shinjuku, a savior will rise to uphold justice but will be assassinated. Who is the savior? Once again, Doomsday looms near…

VIZ Pictures are in a celebratory mood and are holding a special screening FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY at their San Francisco complex on February 9th at 7:30pm. Well, if you didn’t know before I’m sorry I ruined it for you!

When we sent Renochan to see the 3rd installment of the 20th Century Boys films, she became a fan in a big way – evident by her recommendation in the Turning Japanese Holiday Guide this year! Renochan (and fellow 20th Century Boys otaku), your Christmas wishlist just expanded! The 1st film will be here on the 15th of December – just 10 days before Christmas!

The films are based on the manga by Naoki Urasawa, and are directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi (who also directed the live-action movie HAPPILY EVER AFTER – also available from VIZ Pictures).

So what’s the story?:

It all begins in 1969 when a young boy named Kenji and his friends write “The Book of Prophecy” in which they write about a future where they fight against an evil organization trying to takeover the world and bring about doomsday. Years later in 1997, a mysterious cult being lead by a man only known as “Friend” emerges and begins to gain strong influence over society.

Seiji Horibuchi, President and CEO of VIZ Pictures:

“20th CENTURY BOYS mesmerized audiences at its U.S. theatrical premiere in San Francisco this past summer and we’re very proud to announce its North American debut on DVD,” says Seiji. “Naoki Urasawa’s multi-layered story of childhood mystical prophecy, government conspiracies and alien invasion is given a lavish production treatment and the film’s ending is a real cliffhanger that’s also very different from the original manga series. We look forward to introducing audiences to this exciting 3-part science fiction saga!”

As if that weren’t enough, VIZ Cinema in San Francisco are holding screenings of the new release through December. On the 10th specifically, there will be a special event that starts at 7:30pm to mark the DVD release. The tickets cost $25, and it includes an entry pass to the screening, the brand new DVD, a poster, and more! If you’re not sure where to find VIZ Cinema, head for the heart of Japantown. Ticket purchases can be made online or at the theatre’s box-office, and any information on the event can be found at either www.vizcinema.com or www.viz-pictures.com.

While only a small percentage of the population are Christian, the majority of people still dress their houses and shops for the most wonderful time of the year. They even have their own version of Santa Claus whose name is Hotei-osho – a Buddhist monk who visits their houses and leaves presents for the kids. And even though most Japanese people treat the holiday as a matsuri (or festival), the most devout Christian Japanese spend the day itself helping others (for example, sick people in hospital) and doing something nice. So no family time or stuffing themselves with turkey and pudding!

Having said all that, if you’re looking to get your loved ones some Anime, Manga or other goodies with Japanese influence this year, then consider buying some of these fine items that your friendly (and smart) GamingAngels have found for you – just in case you needed a little help!

What happens when a girl (mistaken for a boy) breaks an expensive vase belonging to an exclusive boys club? She has to pay it back of course! Join Haruhi as she not only struggles to get through high school, but deals with young boys and their hormones while paying off a debt that increases by the day. I absolutely fell in love with this series and I would recommend it to anyone looking for laughter, love and a whole lot more! ~Naomi

Vampires are a popular theme this year, and if that is what you like to see in your Anime then I suggest you consider this for your collection. Follow Jiro as he and his little brother Kotaro continue their battle with the vicious Kowloon Children that started 10 years ago. With plenty of humour and vampire action, I would recommend this highly – and I’m not that keen on vampires myself! ~Naomi

Three homeless people – alcoholic Gin, drag queen Hana, and teenage runaway Miyuki – discover an abandoned baby in a pile of garbage. And in the process, they revisit their own haunted pasts and learn to face their future. ~Yukino

I not only had the pleasure to check out the new VIZ Cinema in San Francisco’s New People complex, I got to see the world premier of 20th Century Boys 3. The New People complex is located in Japan Town, right across from the plaza with the peace pagoda. The building itself is amazing. It has stores like Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, a clothing store, and a bookstore.

For those of you that don’t know, 20th Century Boys is a trilogy of movies based on the popular manga of the same title. If you haven’t read the books or seen the other movies, then don’t fear! Neither had I. One of the great things about the third movie is there is a 10-minute introduction that is mainly a summary of the prior two films.

This movie is the conclusion of the trilogy. Now I don’t want to give away too much, but some big things are discovered, like the real identity of Tomodachi. There are a few things like background on characters and locations that are a little confusing, but it’s still a really good movie. Some things seemed really ridiculous because, well, there are some subtle differences in humor and the like that are different in Japanese films than they are in American-made movies.

If you get a chance, definitely find this and the other two and watch them. They are in Japanese, but there are subtitles. The manga is also available to read and enjoy.
