It may sound a little silly, but game streaming service OnLive is using its power to let you do a completely different kind of computing from your iPad.

See, while we may know OnLive more for their ability to stream games, that technology is also perfect for business users who need to use other Windows apps, like Microsoft Office, while on the go. OnLive Desktop (that’s the name of this service, by the way) lets you use an iPad app, available starting this Thursday, to access a suite of Windows 7 applications using their cloud computing services. That same gaming experience will transfer to the world of business computing well, providing a service with little to no lag present.

“OnLive Desktop is the first app to deliver a no-compromise, media-rich Windows desktop experience to iPad, opening up powerful new possibilities for consumers and businesses,” said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. “iPad users will now be able to simply and securely view and edit cloud-hosted documents with full-featured Windows desktop applications like Microsoft Office, just as if they were using a local high-performance PC. Multi-touch gestures respond instantly and smoothly, while HD videos, animations and PC video games—never before usable on a remote desktop—play seamlessly.”

The app will start out with free access to cloud computers as available along with 2 GB of cloud storage. In the near future, a subscription plan priced at $9.99 per month will be rolled out, with priority access to computers included as well as additional apps and an upgrade to 50 GB of cloud storage.

Well, it looks like OnLive is even more on-the-go for a lot of gamers today, with their official iPad app making its debut on Apple’s App Store. The new app will be available for other tablets and smartphones as well, making it a truly mobile experience for some.

Almost every game the service offers is currently compatible with the OnLive Wireless Controller, and that controller is compatible with many of the smartphones and tablets OnLive is serving. (That controller is currently unavailable, but will be up for purchase soon for $49.99, or £39.99 in the UK.)

Currently, about 25 games have been adapted for touchscreen control, but most of those aren’t the big releases you’d likely want to play on the go — think LEGO titles, or a few puzzle games. The controller will be necessary to play a lot of AAA titles when you’re away from your computer — there’s really no good way to transfer an Arkham City or the like to touchscreen controls, if you think about it.

Speaking of LEGO titles, you get a free copy of LEGO Batman to play if you try the app now. So hey, there’s a sweetened deal. For more information, visit OnLive’s website.

Have you used a streaming game service like OnLive before? I’ve tried Gaikai, thanks to their game demos, and it was surprisingly good. What’s keeping you from pulling the trigger, if you haven’t tried their services before?

You are sent a letter to be a part of Hogwarts and have the chance to go to Ollivander’s wand shop to get your wand. You are then of course sorted by the Sorting Hat into one of the now infamous houses at Hogwarts. From there you get to learn three spells and can use them to duel others.

Mastering spells and winning duels also award you house points which can then be combined with those of other players around the world from that same house. You’ll be able to track this via your profile and will even be able to integrate the app with Facebook to show your house pride (or how much nerdier you just got).

Now it does stink that the free app only comes with three spells, however you will be able to buy more to expand your répertoire of spells for $.99 per spell pack. There also is a full version of Harry Potter: Spells that comes with 17 spells already included and a “premium” spell on the app store for $2.99.

It happens a lot more these days – I get the message that “Such-and-such game character is turning 15 this week!” and I remember my first encounter with that character, when I may or may not have been in elementary school.

Except this time it’s Sonic the Hedgehog, he’s turning 19, and I was definitely in preschool. Nothing like not-quite-retro gaming to make you feel old, right?

It’s okay, though. In celebration of the speedy blue guy’s birthday, SEGA’s having a sale on all digital Sonic titles, which includes those up for sale on the Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Store and iPhone/iPad App Store. (For a full list, see this post over at the Sonic blog.)

In addition, there may be a few goodies on the way if you follow Sonic’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

In a move that should be appreciated by the geekiest of Star Wars fans everywhere (not that that’s a bad thing!), THQ announced three new iPhone/iPad apps: A successor to Lightsaber Unleashed, a Diner Dash clone, and a Yoda soundboard. (No, I’m not kidding.)

All links go to the respective title in the iTunes App Store.

Star Wars: Cantina Game ($4.99)

It’s Diner Dash. Or any other time management game you want to insert in its place. Cantina drops you in the middle of Tatooine with thirsty customers to serve. Accuracy and speed reward you, they do. (Want the ultimate meta experience? Try listening to the “Star Wars Cantine” Eddie Izzard bit while you play. I won’t link it, due to foul language, but Jeff Vader wants his penne al arrabiatta, and he wants it quickly.)

Star Wars: Yoda Sound Board ($.99)

A sound board it is. Make prank phone calls you will.

Star Wars: Lightsaber Duel ($.99)

Lightsaber Unleashed was really popular, so they’re capitalizing on that success. Really, can you blame THQ? The new version has you choosing from 15 characters and also lets you choose your own music for battles. So, yes, you can practice that lightsaber choreography you practiced to “Party in the USA.”

So, for any digital title, they’ll be taking care of all the little things leading up to release: ESRB submission, testing, first-party submission, and accounting. They are able to submit games to the PlayStation Store, Xbox LIVE Arcade, the App Store, and WiiWare.

They’ve already done this (and had success!) with quite a few digital titles, like Greed Corp, iSamJackson and Cro-Mag Rally.
