Working on your weight loss-related New Year’s Resolution? Given up already? Well, if you are, or you have, Target and Nintendo have quite the deal for you (assuming you live in the right place).

On weekends from Jan. 16-31, select Target stores will have the “Wii Fit Plus Experience” set up in the parking lot or entrance of the store. The “Experience” will feature eight Wii Fit Plus kiosks, where people can try out the game in a environment that will supposedly be like a yoga studio. (I’m kind of curious as to how they accomplish that feat, because I have never been to Target and thought, “Yeah, I’m gonna do yoga here!” And I love yoga.)

Not only that, but ambassadors representing Target and Nintendo will be handing out healthy snacks from Target’s Archer Farms brand.

The biggest thing, however, is that visitors who complete the Wii Fit Plus demo will receive a $15 Target GiftCard (while supplies last, of course — what, do you expect Target to hand out free cash all day?). That, coupled with the $19.99 MSRP for the Wii Fit Plus disc will make it easy for people who own the original disc to upgrade (the balance board and disc bundle is $99.99).

The following Target stores are scheduled to participate in the Wii Fit Plus Experience:

Jan. 16-17
2705 Teller Road
Thousand Oaks, CA 91320

3201 Preston Rd
Frisco, TX 75034

1525 Market Place Blvd.
Cumming, GA 30041

Jan. 23-24

Nestled in metro Atlanta, this year’s Southern Interactive Entertainment & Game Expo (lovingly known as SIEGE) was my first of many experiences to come with Georgia’s booming gaming industry. This year, the overall theme of the weekend was connections – meeting like-minded individuals, having discussions after the panels have ended, making new friends and opening up to the rest of the community.

SIEGE is very much an industry event. It is put on every year by the Georgia Game Developers Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to the growth and development of the electronic and video gaming businesses and professionals in the state. Local studios such as Hi-Rez, CCP/White Wolf, Silly Monkey and Tripwire attended this year, as did representatives from the several local colleges and universities which offer game design or related industry courses.

The Volunteer Ringleader

Over a 48 hour period, beginning Friday afternoon and ending Sunday afternoon, several panels and round-tables take place, focusing on specific career tracks. There were panels for designers and programmers, audio, art, serious games (IE: educational or military games) and business. Attendance at these panels is high, as there are students, recent grads, and people already in the industry packing the rooms to learn and discuss how they can further themselves and how their field can progress through these types of public forums.

Saturday’s activities also included a College & Career Fair. One of the ballrooms was set aside for recruiters from a few of the local studios and colleges to speak with students and recent graduates. There was also an open portfolio review and two special panels on Saturday for students to attend.

HiRez Studios brought Global Agenda for attendees to try out

The Expo Hall featured Hi-Rez and their “spy-fi” MMO Global Agenda, which is currently in beta. I spent a lot of time ogling the graphics and watching others play each of the four classes in PvE mode (Player vs Environment). Each class is available to be played as male or female and are customizable. If they had brought a 360 controller along I would have given it a shot myself, but my keyboard/mouse skills are awful. Global Agenda was definitely the busiest booth in the room.

Some students from ACAD were in attendance and encouraging networking and social interaction with the game Suits. The game is based off of the work of Richard Bartle and blends social aspects with classic dungeon mechanics of role playing games. A lot of people attending SIEGE were taking part. I was mostly in it for the badges (which were shiny buttons). The person who turned in the most sets of cards, coins or badges in the various classes won prizes which the students provided.

The Suits Booth

This was my first year attending SIEGE, and I have to say that I was so surprised with the turn out and sense of community I felt all around me. I am definitely going to continue attending this great convention and I look forward to checking out each of the studios in the area. The Georgia Game Developers truly know the meaning and importance of community.

KontrolFreek announced today that they have landed three new spokespeople for their gaming accessories. Kelly Kelley, Jamal Nickens and Mark “applesauce” Smith (World Cyber Games players) have all signed contracts to promote the SpeedFreeks and FPSFreeks controller attachments, as well as future products from the Atlanta-based company.

KontrolFreek products are available for $9.99 a set on their website, their new Amazon store, and other fine retailers.

As someone who has been using their products for the past two years, I would like to personally add that my SpeedFreek never comes off my Xbox 360 controller other than to clean it. I highly recommend that anyone who is looking for that added control with gaming seriously considers purchasing these add-ons.

Program “Getting Girls in the Game” launches today at the Southern Interactive Entertainment & Game Expo (SIEGE) in Atlanta. The program is a two year mentoring opportunity to assist women getting into the digital entertainment industry.

Women in the digital entertainment industry barely make up 10 percent. Even though more than 40 percent of gamers in the US are female. Project Directors Abigail Joslin and Andrew Greenberg started Getting Girls in the Game to help create a community that supports women getting into the industry or into college.

“The Georgia Game Developers Association is very excited to see this program start; it is a much-needed initiative. Ultimately, it will help attract more women to an exciting industry, and improve the depth and caliber of games being produced,” said Clinton A. Lowe, President of the Georgia Game Developers Association.

No information is listed on how to get involved but I would inquire with SIEGE organizers to find out more.
