Wal-Mart enters pre-owned games market

Wal-Mart has decided to enter the pre-owned games market. Previously they had tested out trade-in Kiosks in the store, much like Best Buy and it must have been a success because they have decided to launch an in-store pre-owned section. According to Wal-Mart’s website, the pre-owned games are guaranteed to play. “Every pre-owned video game is polished, tested and inspected prior to shipping to ensure that it performs properly. All games will be delivered with original product packaging, shrink-wrapped and with a sticker designating them as pre-owned.” Taking a look at their inventory online, their prices do seem low/competitive to other pre-owned game stores. Best Buy starts pre-own program

Best Buy is not satisfied just selling new games. They are rolling out video game “vending machines” to start selling pre-owned games. The kiosks are on trial in Dallas and Austin stores in the US. Best Buy CMO Barry Judge said: “As we continue to explore new ways to make our customers happy, Best Buy is moving into the used games market. “This week, several of our Dallas and Austin stores will test a kiosk-based model that allows customers to insert their used games into a kiosk that will scan it for functionality, and immediately issue a voucher that is instantly redeemable for a Best Buy gift card. “It’s a pretty slick system and one of the few trade-in programs to provide instant gratification; you get the gift card on the spot and can redeem it on anything in the store – not just another game.
