Diablo III sets sales records in its first week

Even though the launch may have hit several snafus, and servers are still having some trouble, this has not stopped the forces of hell from setting new records. 3.5 million copies of Diablo III were sold on launch day (not including copies given to WoW Annual Pass holders), setting the new all-time record for the fastest selling PC game. After the first week, Diablo III has now sold over 6.3 million copies and that number is still growing. “We’re definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a

Diablo III animated short “Wrath” released

I love seeing what game developers and publishers do to help promote their upcoming games, and I think Blizzard has done another such thing with this Diablo III animated short. Entitled “Diablo III: Wrath” it was released yesterday on YouTube, the short was a collaboration between Blizzard, Aeon Flux creator Peter Chung and animation studio Titmouse who is famous for their series Metalocalypse. The names alone told me that this was going to be a fantastic thing, and after watching it I’m now wanting this to be a full on animated series. There’s plenty of lore to pull from, so why not? I can only hope and dream of such a thing to grace my TV on [adult swim]. You can watch Diablo III: Wrath below:

    New Diablo III TV spot

In case you missed it last night, there was a new Diablo III spot that aired during Family Guy last night: [youtube id="K-ZA7NLSRhg" width="600" height="350"] It’s a nicely done short trailer that includes some highlights from an extended trailer we saw at Blizzcon last year. And it only helped to get me more excited for the release on May 15th!

‘World of Warcraft’ is having a seventh-anniversary party, and you get a present

Can you believe it? World of Warcraft is seven years old next week on November 23. It’s old enough to enter the second grade, as anyone who had a child around launch time will tell you (and then they’ll probably look a little tired). WoW, however, is still going strong — and to celebrate, anyone logging in to the game from November 20 to December 3 gets an anniversary Feat of Strength added to their achievements as well as a “Celebration Package.” Opening that package sets off fireworks (Blizzard asks that you “please observe all goblin and gnome fire hazard warnings and celebrate responsibly”), applies a new tabard to your character, and also activates a buff granting an extra seven percent experience and reputation bonus for however long it’s active (which is hopefully long enough for me to get a bit of grinding in!). Not only that, but Blizzard’s airing

More info on StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm released

Today at Blizzcon there has been more news and information regarding the next expansion Heart of the Swarm. Now, sadly this information doesn’t include a release date, but there is still some exciting stuff. Heart of the Swarm will be picking up where Wings of Liberty left off. As expected, you will play as Kerrigan, and similarly from Wings of Liberty, as you progress through the game Kerrigan will grow in strength and earn new abilities, and players will choose which powers to enhance and use from mission to mission. The game will have 20 new campaign missions, new gameplay mechanics and even some new multiplayer units! In-game and pre-rendered cinematics will make a return this time as well. There will also be some new Battle.net features which will help with custom-game searching as well as new tools for map authors. There are new things to play here at Blizzcon

Want ‘Diablo III’ for free? Commit to a year of ‘World of Warcraft’

Blizzard’s new World of Warcraft “Annual Pass” comes with a neat addition. Nay, an awesome one. When you sign up for the 12-month Annual Pass plan (and you can do that right here), you not only get a free copy of Diablo III, but you also get an awesome mount based on Diablo III‘s Tyrael’s Charger as well as guaranteed access to the beta of Mists of Pandaria, the fifth expansion of World of Warcraft. The mount features some pretty awesome wings, right? And I can’t even pretend that it’s the big deal anymore. The free copy of Diablo III is. And it’s apparently a limited-time deal, probably only because the new game is launching early next year. We still don’t have timing for Diablo III‘s release, or even that of the Pandaria beta, but…it’s Blizzard Time. “Soon” is sufficient, right? The Annual Pass can either be billed at $14.99

Blizzard is auctioning off old servers, with proceeds going to charity

You know, if you play World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s been upgrading the infrastructure over time. Honestly, there’s really no better memento of your play time than one of the BladeSystem servers that Blizzard housed your realm on. These “honorably discharged” servers are getting to serve their true purpose in life starting October 17, when Blizzard will begin auctioning them off on eBay with all proceeds to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. “World of Warcraft realms are like the virtual neighborhoods of the game’s community — they contain the spaces where millions of players have made friendships, forged friendly rivalries, and created lasting memories,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “Each winner in this auction will own a small monument to those collective experiences. The best part is that this auction benefits a great charity doing tremendous work in helping children from the U.S. and around the
