DFC Intelligence released a report last week that reflected on the future of the gaming industry. People are always speculating on when Microsoft and Sony are planning to update their systems. Nintendo is the only company that we know will have a new system next year and DFC Intelligence says that while it will sell well, it won’t beat out the Wii sales.

“Systems like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are having their best sales ever five or six years into their lifecycle. Unfortunately this means Microsoft and Sony are in no hurry to launch new systems that would generate substantial consumer excitement and spending,” says DFC analyst David Cole. DFC forecast that the Nintendo Wii U will have strong sales, but will not reach the level of success of the first Wii system. “The dedicated console business is still the major driver of industry growth, but we feel overall it has peaked with the current console systems.”

In their findings, the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 are making true on their claims to have a long life span. The Wii however, has peaked in their eyes.

Other findings show that the game industry will only get stronger as sales go from $66 billion to $81 billion in 2016. Which hopefully points to a better jobs economy in the gaming industry over the years to come.

The price drop on the 3DS helped make it the number 2 selling game system in the US in August. Nintendo sent out NPD stats, saying that 185,000 units were sold after the price drop. Making 3DS sales go up by a whopping 260 percent compared to July.

“Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching tomorrow, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season.”

Other things to note, the Wii and DS are still selling strong. Nintendo skus are selling well making 15 out of the top 20 games in the month. It will be interesting to see how the 3DS continues to perform through the holidays.

Back in June, we reported that Redbox had started to deliver video games in it’s kiosk service. The service added video games, but it’s not a very robust service yet. Most titles (at the time) are only offered for one console. Instead of all the consoles it may have been released for.

I sent Director of Video Games at Redbox, Joel Resnick some questions about the service. Read the following interview to find out how they are going to handle demand and if your information will be save on the kiosk.

GamingAngel: Our community are really excited about renting games from Redbox. I’ve been hearing about it for quite awhile, and people have dropped other services in anticipation. It’s a good problem to have, but how is Redbox going to deal with demand? How does the system let users know if they are out and if there is another close location that they can find it at?

Joel Resnick: We are very excited about game rentals as well! The best way to ensure a DVD or game is available is to visit redbox.com, or use the redbox mobile app, to locate the nearest kiosk with availability and simply reserve it. It will be waiting for you when you arrive.

Is there a system for checking the discs or letting the system know if a disc is broken?

If your disc is damaged, please let redbox know through the “Ask a Question” form or by calling the redbox Customer Care team at 1.866.REDBOX3 (1.866.733.2693). Redbox technicians swap out discs each week to ensure the best quality of all discs.

I have not heard much about the iPhone app and the use of it to reserve copies. How does that work? Is there a particular login you have at the physical box or is it all based on credit card used?

The official redbox iPhone and Android apps let you browse and reserve movies right on your phone. The apps are free to download, and they make finding the perfect movie or game easier than ever. Apps are available at the iPhone app store and Android market respectively.

Last, in light of everything being hacked lately (particularly gaming companies), how secure is the data? Is anything stored on the boxes themselves?

Redbox uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure the privacy of all of your data. A few of the many security features redbox uses: (1) All redbox credit card transactions meet the Data Security Standard of the credit card industry. (2) All redbox kiosks are actively monitored and regularly inspected both on-site and remotely.

Thank you Redbox for the interview. I used the app for a little bit and found that it did not have all the Redbox locations available in my area. Maybe they don’t do reservations. Also note that the selection is limited.
