GameFly announced yesterday that the rental subscription service has acquired IGN’s Direct2Drive service, meaning that soon, you might be able to digitally rent games. Of course, they said nothing to that effect, with GameFly CEO David Hodess only noting that Direct2Drive will “expand [their] ability to deliver games to consumers.”

Hodess also said that this acquisition will allow GameFly to “offer a complete library of physical and digital games for the PC, Mac and consoles in one place.”

Because of this transaction, IGN will now have a minority stake in GameFly, but this won’t affect their operations. In any case, this also means that News Corporation is now an observer to their board. Interesting stuff, really.

“GameFly has been an innovator in the video games industry, and it continues to evolve with the expansion of its digital offering. We’re excited to continue working and partnering with GameFly moving forward,” said Jorge Espinel, News Corporation’s EVP of Strategy and Corporate Development.

We don’t know any more than this, but I get the feeling that we’re going to need to keep an eye on this situation. It’s like IGN’s taking tiny nibbles of…well, everything.

GameFly is already in a battle with the US Postal Service which means today’s findings can’t be good for the USPS. Philly.com reports that Reginald Johnson, a former Philadelphia mail handler, has admitted to a federal court that he stole 2200 GameFly games — totaling $86,000 in value — before they could be delivered to local subscribers. That’s alot of games!

Of course he wasn’t taking them for personal gaming use. He would trade in games at GameStop and get store credit. Johnson was caught because of an investigation as to why so many games went missing in the Philadelphia area. Local authorities caught him with 60 games and a load of Wii Fit units, controllers, a Playstation and GameStop receipts in a SUV and duffel bag.
