GameStop is launching their own Android tablet, accepting iOS devices for trade

Two big moves in the tablet gaming space for one game retailer have been confirmed today. GameStop has selected an Android tablet model to serve as their “official” gaming platform next year. These tablet models will launch with some titles pre-installed. “We’re in test phase right now,” GameStop president Tony Bartel told GamesIndustry.biz. “But we’re excited at the prospect of coming out with this tablet. I would call it a ‘GameStop certified gaming platform.’ We looked at all the tablets and these are the ones that really worked for gaming and we’re going to give you a few benefits that you’re not going to get elsewhere.” The eventual intent for the tablet will be for it to stream console games (using the service they’re developing with recently-acquired Spawn Labs). The unit will ship with a special controller for this purpose. GameStop will also begin to accept Apple devices running iOS

GameStop is removing OnLive vouchers from PC copies of ‘Deus Ex: Human Revolution’

Stop! If you’re planning to buy Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PC, you might want to avoid GameStop for retail copies. Based on an email sent from Field Manager Josh Ivanoff (you can see an edited version of it above), some stores have been ordered to remove vouchers for a free OnLive copy of the game. At the moment, Ivanoff hasn’t responded to calls from multiple outlets, but GameStop representative Beth Sharum has confirmed the practice, telling OnLive Spot that “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our Deus Ex: Human Revolution product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons.” Note that this isn’t a chain-wide practice, but such a policy even being enforced is really shady. GameStop does have their reasoning, though — as reported in March, GameStop has purchased both digital download service Impulse as well as Spawn Labs’ streaming technology. You know

You can get your own little ‘Mama’ really easily

Need help around the house? What about cooking lessons? Or maybe someone who can clean up after you? Well, you’re stuck doing that stuff on your own, sorry. But if you want a collectible “Mama” plush doll, that’s easy enough to get — pre-order Cooking Mama 4 for Nintendo 3DS at your local GameStop. Like I said, this “Mama” can’t help you out, but at least she can sit there and look cute, I suppose. I wish some sort of item had been provided for scale’s sake, so we could figure out just how big this doll is, but I would say it’s probably not that big at all (unfortunately). Cooking Mama 4 releases this fall.

GameStop no longer stocking DS Lite units

The DS Lite is what made a lot of us trade in our original Nintendo DS units — the slim form factor meant just a little bit of extra room in our bags, which meant we could tote a few more games around, right? Well, that turned into the DSi, and the DSi XL, and now the 3DS, so the second-generation DS is looking a little old, unfortunately. GameStop sees this, and Joystiq confirmed yesterday that the retailer will no longer be stocking new DS Lite units. One retailer’s choice won’t affect your purchasing decisions too much, however — other retail outlets are still stocking the units for now. (It is possible that they could follow suit in the future, however, so if you were looking to buy one of these handhelds, you might want to accelerate that decision.)

GameStop acquires digital download system Impulse as well as Spawn Labs’ streaming technology

Make way for GameStop in the land of digital downloads — the company announced today that they’re purchasing Impulse, Inc., Stardock’s digital game delivery service. The purchase also includes a couple of Impulse’s tools. Stardock has already put together a list of FAQs for all concerned parties. This deal won’t close, however, until May of this year. Spawn Labs streams games and has been developing a way for consumers to utilize their services since 2009 — sounds like GameStop might be ready to enter the streaming market, as well. How do you feel about this move?

GameStop hits it big during the holidays

THIS JUST IN – kids like video games as presents! (And other people, too, obviously.) How much do people like giving and receiving game-related gifts? Well, GameStop can give you a specific dollar amount. Over the nine-week holiday period ending on New Year’s Day, GameStop sold $3.02 billion (billion with a B) in merchandise. This is a number that easily causes my eyes to roll because of its hugeness. The sales were driven by a number of high-profile launches during the holiday period – Kinect, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm and other software, some of which might also include a colon in the title (that does seem to be a trend here, doesn’t it?). GameStop.com also saw big leaps in sales numbers. Gift card sales also grew by 32% during the month of December. The totals increased by 5.4% over last year’s numbers.
