Alabama tornado hits close to home
Yesterday two of our staff members, Tiffany (aka @kweenie) and Tiara (aka @GamesAre4Girls) were unfortunate enough to experience the tornado that went through Alabama. “I woke up this morning and it felt like everything that happened yesterday was just a nightmare. I still don’t know if I’m actually awake, but I do know that I’m very lucky to be alive, either way,” said Tiffany. Thankfully, both of them and their families are all safe and well. As a former “Tornado Alley” resident after hearing all of the bad stuff brewing I was nervous, as were the rest of the staff here. Once the tornado passed through, Tiffany went out and shot video of some of the destruction that occurred only a few blocks from her home. The devastation from tornadoes is always bad, especially the larger ones like what has been determined to have hit Tuscaloosa. All of us at

Gaming Angels at the Nintendo 3DS launch in NYC
I may not have been purchasing one at launch, but I was excited to attend the 3DS launch at Best Buy in Union Square, NYC. The first thing I noticed was that it looked big and important. There was a stage, a DJ booth, demo stations, Nintendo employees walking around with 3DS units and even a taco truck. But when I first arrived the turn out was pretty small considering this was a brand new console launch. However the people there were all in good spirits and enjoying themselves so it still looked fun. I didn’t check any of the demo stations since I’ve had plenty of hands on time with the 3DS but I encouraged some friends I ran into to make sure they checked it out. It was great that Nintendo made the system accessable for everyone to play between the demo stations and the employees walking around.

Play World of Warcraft with Kinect?
World of Warcraft is a fun game to play, but can be physically difficult for some people. I know I can only play for a certain amount of time before my wrists start to hurt. That is why the video below is so promising and exciting. Researchers at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies have created a toolkit that allows Kinect to work with the PC. From there, the software is created to allow the researchers to play World of Warcraft using the Kinect without any mouse or keyboard interaction. The potential uses go beyond gaming. The team talks about on their youtube page about using it for rehabilitation. I can imagine that it would make it easier for able gamers to play for varying lengths of time. And really who wouldn’t want to do a magic command with a wave of their hand? It’s great to

Geek feminism and relational aggression: Are we the real “Mean Girls”?
This is the first in a multipart series on the intersection between feminism and geekery, inspired by this post at Geek Feminism. Stay tuned for what will, hopefully, be a weekly column from several of our staffers. Geek Feminism is not something that I’ve put a whole lot of stock into until recently. As a latecomer to feminism (indoctrinated shortly after reading Naomi Wolf’s “The Beauty Myth”), I have often looked past the misogyny inherent in (nearly all facets of) geekdom. More often than I care to count, I’ve been the recipient of blatant sexism and downright hatred of women, especially during the time I spent working in the IT world. I’ve been a technician, a software developer, and a web developer. I’ve been involved in many avenues of geekery since I was old enough to hold a controller. Up until 2009, I really didn’t like women. ………………….. I’d always

Building a Computer Step 2: Putting it Together
This is the second step in my mini-series on How to Build a Computer. In this video I talk about the basic steps of putting the parts together, the simple tools you need and give you a good foundation on where and how to start assembling your rig. Although I still highly suggest you go through and read the manuals for specific instructions and details on your items. If you haven’t already here is my previous article How to Build a Computer: The Plan. There I talk about and explain the process of planning and picking out your components and what to look for. Tools needed for assembly: a phillips screwdriver grounding/static strap zip ties a work space lots of patience Any questions or suggestions please drop me a comment. Any and all criticism is welcomed. Video Note: I really wanted to avoid splitting my video like my previous entry.

GameStop buys out online game site Kongregate
Granted I haven’t been to Kongregate in a bit, but I’ve played there for years, have a decent amount of achievements and met some cool people. Kongregate was a great site for people who make flash games to host their games, get players and even as of late make some money off of some micro transactions. Now I’m worried with the news that GameStop has apparently bought the gaming site. “Combining Kongregate’s expansive catalogue of games with our well known consumer brand, powerful marketing and strong customer relationships, means that even more gamers will be able to enjoy their games anytime, anywhere and on any device,” says GameStop president Tony Bartel. The company did not disclose terms of the acquisition. True this could be good for the independent site, but at the same time it’s GameStop and anything they touch I’m immediately skeptical of. Who knows what changes GameStop may

How To Build a Computer: The Plan
So with Starcraft 2 release just around the corner I felt the incredible urge to build a whole new rig for myself in this momentous occasion. Why build a computer? Well lots of reasons, it’s easier to upgrade a custom built computer, which beats buying a new rig every couple years. Your computer will be much faster than a low end Dell, HP, or Gateway because you’ll be picking the components. Rather than Dell using cheap OEM components to keep the price down. You’ll also know where your money is going and able to get a bigger bang for your buck. Dolla Dolla Bills Y’all First thing before you even start thinking about your components is your budget. How much are you willing to spend? It is completely possible to spend less than $1000 and have a pretty fast and powerful computer. Just keep in mind that if you want

Guest Article: A 10 Year Old Boy Made Me Angry
It’s 2am CST and I am playing Modern Warfare 2 with some adult friends. We are talking with each other and occasionally with players from other teams. We talk about parenting, drinking, working, married life, sex, paying bills…normal adult conversations. We swear and joke about adult situations. We should be allowed to, it’s “adult time”. Anyone online at that time should be of an age to handle it. Then out of nowhere there emerges a tiny, squeaky voice. “I’m going to own you guys!!!” That’s it. My night starts downhill. This squeaky voice comes from a 10 year old boy. He’s not bad at the game, nut that’s not really the problem. He is talking non-stop. Screaming and cussing at his enemy. Talking smack to anyone that will respond to him. And, saying things that would probably make his mother clutch her heart, keel over, and die.Or at least grab a bar
