    Companions RPG for iOS

Companions is a recent indie top-down RPG -ish strategy game for iOS. It is much more heavily a strategy game with old school gameplay mechanics. It can actually be challenging and quite difficult, if you haven’t played one of these before. It has the grid based navigation like a tower defense game. However, one gamer’s challenge can be another gamer’s annoyance. In Companions there are two game modes, which are the quick play ‘Single Map’ mode, and the Campaign mode. Each of the members of the four person team has a little backstory. The controls are simple taps on the characters and then a tap on the enemies to attack. Each party member has three special skills that they can equip at a time. They are limited by cool down times as you would normally see. Graphics are limited. It’s very pixelish. You don’t actually see your characters in three

Empress of the Deep 2 Song of the Blue Whale

Empress of the Deep 2 Song of the Blue Whale is out and it is another terrific offering from the franchise. This hidden object and puzzle game has some of the best features out there for this type of game. The graphics, sound and puzzles are all outstanding. It has superior graphics, and a beautiful art-style for the backgrounds. There is lots of magical glitter around. Special effects move the cutscenes and animations along with cleverly used transitions. There are flowing fountains and decorative ponds surrounded by gardens. The animal Guardians in the game who are outfitted with brass fittings that are able to translate animal to human speech. The animals aren’t the only nod to steam punk in the game. Entire areas look like they have been detailed with shiny brass whatnots. It is beautiful, and once again like the first Empress of the Deep, all those pipes and

    Weekly Roundup Episode 15

Sorry about the delay, folks — I’ve got weekend brain, thanks to Harry Potter-induced melancholy. This week, our biweekly special guest, Summer from Fandomania, is back, and it’s inappropriate as usual. Also as usual, it’s all her fault. First, it’s what we’ve been playing, followed by the news: Sony Online Entertainment is charging for DCUO DLC, Netflix is charging more, PopCap’s got new owners, Sony’s “Welcome Back” worked in some sene and the 90s is coming back to television. Well, the 90s on Nickelodeon, anyway. Listen in the player below, or find us on iTunes! (And if you are a faithful listener, be a dear and review us?) As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. Be sure to take a listen to Blood Angels, our True Blood podcast. ALSO: We’ve got some new stuff coming up, but

    Weekly Roundup Episode 14

It’s time for another Weekly Roundup! This week, we have our first voicemail question (!) from @tyrone_hawk, about how to get his wife to enjoy playing first-person shooters, instead of just watching. Then it’s on to what we’ve been playing this week, the Gears of War 3 debacle, Civilization’s new Facebook offering, more on the Wii U, Sony’s PSN Pass…and the Mass Effect movie. Because they’re bringing it to San Diego Comic Con in some manner. Hope you enjoy this week’s show! As always, we encourage you to check out our partners in GamingAngels Presents: The Married Gamers, Game Dames and PrincessCast. Be sure to take a listen to Blood Angels, our True Blood podcast. School 26: Summer of Secrets

Silicon Sisters is a female development studio from Canada. Not too long ago we interviewed them for Women in Games. Coming soon they will be celebrating the season with a brand new School 26 game. They are calling it tantalizingly subtitled. Summer of Secrets is coming to the App Store in July. Like the first School 26 installment, School 26: Summer of Secrets is a school themed game aimed for girls. It has unique psychological gameplay revolving around social skills. The School 26 games are said to have been developed with the help of academic research and had extensive focus testing among teens. School 26: Summer of Secrets includes music from up-and-coming Vancouver band Hey Ocean! The first School 26 game is currently on sale $0.99 for iPhone / iPod Touch or $1.99 for iPad.

Weekly Roundup Episode 13 (Please don’t be unlucky!)

Our special guest is back, yay! But Trina’s not with us, boo. She’s off doing Important Things, so I guess we can give her a pass. This week, it’s all about retro games, Supreme Court rulings, and unsavory working conditions. Well, that and some more stuff. (Because remember, there’s always more.) We hope you enjoy this week’s hilarity! Listen in the player below, or find us on iTunes. Relevant links are below the player. The Supreme Court is on our side, yay! (Also, graham crackers.) Leland Yee just won’t give up. (Dude, give up. Capcom 3DS titles are apparently single-play only. (Notice we didn’t say single-player.) Nintendo insists on breaking our hearts. (And keeping the thing they need in North America out of North America.) Team Bondi insists on breaking its employees. (This is why you might not actually want to be a game developer.) As always, we encourage you

It’s time to announce our National Computer Camp scholarship winner!

The choice was a hard one to make, let me tell you. We received essays on games ranging from BioShock 2 to Harvest Moon. Some girls wanted to add contextual minigames to Wizard 101. But as much as we wished we could give out multiple scholarships, just like Highlander, there can be only one. (Winner, that is.) GamingAngels staff chose Annapolis, Md.’s Sarah Bishop, 16, as the prize winner after reading her essay on improvements she would want to make in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. You can read her entry at the end of this post. Congratulations, Sarah! We hope you enjoy your time at Computer Camp. We also extend a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who entered the contest. I’m sure I speak for the rest of the staff when I say that I hope we can offer an opportunity like this again.   Here’s Sarah’s essay:   My

NBC hangs with GamingAngels at E3

Yesterday we kicked E3 off with a bang as we met up with the wonderful @JenniferNBCLA from NBC and took her with us to our Nintendo appointment. We spoke with @JenniferNBCLA about Women in Games, the latest figures on Women in Games (we’re at 42% now!) and the need to have more women in the industry! At the Nintendo booth, we were able to preview the Wii U on two games which we all played together. You can see us checking out the controller in the video below. I was able to escape our new NBC friend. Hopefully she had a great time and in the end, we made her an official GamingAngel! Enjoy! View more videos at: http://www.nbclosangeles.com.
