How Epic Games Was My Personal Post-Tragedy Therapist

Last September, I had a miscarriage. I was only six weeks along, so I hadn’t had my first prenatal appointment yet and hadn’t really had long to be excited. Still, when it happened, I was rather upset. I took off the rest of day from work, but I really wanted a distraction. Fortunately for me, Gears of War 3 released the day before, providing the most perfect distraction. It was violent, it was fun, and I got to shoot ugly monsters. The last sentiment was the most important for my catharsis. I honestly don’t know what could have made me feel better on that day. I only had a couple of hours between coming home from the doctor and picking up my son from daycare, but after that brief time, I felt better. I didn’t feel as sad, and I no longer felt like I would burst into tears at

My 5 Most Memorable Gaming Moments of 2011

I can honestly say that I have never played as many games as I did in 2011. With the way that 2012 is rolling out, it looks like it will be another busy year for me–busy in the best sense of the word, of course. However, not all of these games I played had really defining moments that made my jaw drop or brought a tear to my eye. Many were absolute fun, but few had those moments that took my breath away and really made a lasting impression. Here are my most memorable five moments from 2011 video games. Please note that I only included games that were released in 2011 and not all games I played in 2011. If the latter were true, it would be nothing but Mass Effect scenes. Please also note that THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS LIST. Ye has been warned, so I don’t

First DLC for ‘Gears of War 3′ hits a snag

More than a few “Season Pass” subscribers are wondering where the first downloadable add-on for Gears of War 3 is today. Turns out the “Horde Command Pack” has hit a bit of a delay out the door. The announcement was made on the Epic Games forums late last night: The scheduled Horde Command Pack release for Gears of War 3 is temporarily delayed due to a technical issue. We apologize to those of you who are anxiously awaiting to play. We know this is disappointing news as we’ve seen a lot of posts today showing excitement for this content. We have folks working around the clock to resolve this issue ASAP so you can all play and enjoy the Command Pack. The Epic Games Community team will stick around and keep you posted with any further information. Stay tuned for updates! So it’s coming (hopefully soon), but I can see

‘Gears of War 3′ Horde Command Pack can be yours November 1

The first add-on for Epic’s Gears of War 3, the Horde Command Pack, will be available at the beginning of November. The Command Pack will include three new maps, three new characters, two new weapon skins and a new set of fortification upgrades for use during Horde mode (hence the name). This also ups the total Gamerscore for the title by 250. Here’s the full details on these additions: New maps: Blood Drive – The Jacinto Medical Plaza was overwhelmed by evacuated citizens after the government-sanctioned Hammer Strikes, and the ensuing riots quickly turned this safe haven into a dangerous inferno. An abundance of high ground and funneled choke points make this map a returning favorite to Horde. Rustlung – Once the pride of the Royal Tyran Navy, the foredecks of this decommissioned battleship are now riddled with bullet holes. Any team with the fortitude to hold the exposed central

Encase your 360 in a Gears Vault

Maybe you already have an Xbox 360 and don’t feel like purchasing another one to get the special Gears look and feel. But it looks so awesome right? Well now you can get a Gears of War 3 Vault and make your Xbox look like you are ready to fight the Locust Horde. The Gears of War 3 Vault will be out next week for $89.99. The Vault includes a “Bleed-Out” finish, a controller cradle and an LED Infected Omen that gets this…. glows red every time you’re downed by an opponent. That is so intense! Although it means that mine would glow all the time in multiplayer, but I know some of you Gears fans are pretty good and wouldn’t get that glow. The vault also comes with a customizable nameplate for things like your Clan name or gamertag. A little personalization goes a long way. The Vault looks

‘Gears of War 3′ will feature a DLC season pass

Gears of War 3 is a few weeks away from launch, but that’s not stopping Microsoft and Epic from letting us know what’s on the way. Several downloadable add-ons are coming for the game (naturally), starting in November. We don’t know exactly what those will be, aside from the fact that they’ll contain both campaign and multiplayer content, but you can “preorder” the first four by purchasing a Season Pass for 2400 Microsoft Points. Yeah, that’s $30. But apparently that’s a 33% savings compared to buying them all separately. It also includes a “Liquid Metal Weapon Set.” Gears of War 3 launches Sept. 20 in three editions — Standard ($59.99), Limited ($79.99) and Epic ($149.99). One of those comes with a lancer or something. So at least there’s that, if you’re planning to drop a Benjamin and a half on the Epic edition. Follow
