New Halo Book Coming from Greg Bear
Tor Books has announced the cover image and title for the new Halo novel to be penned by Science Fiction and Fantasy writer, Greg Bear. Bear is just the newest in the stable of SFF writers including Karen Traviss and Eric Nylund that have written for the Halo universe. This new novel by Greg Bear kicks of a trilogy of novels called “The Forerunner Saga”, the first of which is “Halo: Cryptum”. Cryptum will be out sometime in January of 2011, so fans of the Halo universe story don’t have to wait long to get their hands on it. Tor will also be publishing an unabridged audio book simultaneously with the novel’s release. From the press release, here’s an idea of what kind of story fans have to look forward to, and what secrets about the universe the trilogy might reveal: Halo: Cryptum will begin the first deep exploration into

PAX Panel: HALO Reach
Early, Saturday morning, I had one goal and one goal only… to attend the Bungie panel and meet up. I was lured to go and stand in line by the promise of sweet, sweet swag. My friends, like sirens, tried to pull me away and convince me to do other things at PAX. I started with a strong group of Spartans and one by one, they fell into the clutches of the many other things you can do at Pax. It was all up to me now. So I braved my way to the Pegasus Theater at the Sheraton. Thousands were gathered and the Pax enforcers were the only ones that knew where the lines ended or even began. It was madness! I finally reached the end of the line, and as I sat my book bag down, I took a peek behind me to find that the line was now out of the room, with the

An extended live-action look at “Halo: Reach”
Two weeks ago, the Halo: Reach short “Deliver Hope” was lauded by fans. Now, we’ve got a slightly longer version for you to love once again. It’s more than twice as long as the original, and features more footage of the Noble Team’s sacrifice. The game releases on September 14, but dedicated fans have been counting down for weeks, I’m sure.

Gamer Wedding 101: Cake Toppers
Our very own @gamingangel is getting married tomorrow! In honor of her, it’s time for more ways to make your wedding reflect one of your favorite hobbies and subcultures. If you’re brand-new to the whole “wedding planning” thing, you might not know that there are people out there in the world that can do amazing things with pastries. Cakes, more specifically. And if you think you’d be the first person to ask for a video game cake, well, you’d be wrong. To wit, the best Mario cake I’ve ever seen: This is the best way to be sure that gaming has prominent placement. Find a talented cake artist, sit down with them, and work out a plan. However, this isn’t always cost-effective. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that it’s one of the most expensive wedding options you can choose. If you’ve got the cash and

Microsoft and Bungie to release special edition Halo: Reach Xbox 360 bundle and wireless headset
Today at San Diego Comic Con Microsoft revealed that they will be releasing a special Xbox 360 Slim for Halo: Reach. Designed by Bungie, the limited edition console is in a silver color with some accents and it will come with two controllers that fit the theme. This bundle will also come with a standard copy of Halo: Reach and will retail for $399 USD. Personally I wouldn’t mind snagging a controller or two separately as I think those steal the show over the console itself. However the minimalistic design for the console and the “Property of…” message on the side is very cool. For those who have not picked up a slim, this may be a nudge for them to! You can also check out more images on Major Nelson’s Flickr page. To pre-order the bundle from Amazon, start here. ETA: In addition, a Halo: Reach wireless headset will

Karen Traviss to write new Halo novels
Yesterday Tor announced that Karen Traviss (one of my favorite authors in the World of Warcraft universe) will be penning the sequel to the Halo: Ghosts of Onyx as well as some future books to expand upon the Halo universe. Traviss has already tried her hand at the Halo universe when she wrote the short story “Human Weakness” that was included in the Halo: Evolutions short story anthology. “When I was invited to write Halo fiction I already knew it’d be right up my street; not just because military fiction is my specialty, but because there’s also huge unexplored depth, grey areas, and really uncomfortable moral dilemmas that underpin the Halo story, and that’s like catnip to a writer like me.” says Traviss. “I write what’s known as tight third person – that is, I get right inside each character’s head and see the world as they see experience it

Getting Back in Touch with the Boys from Blood Gulch
I remember back during my Halo 1 and 2 days (has it really been that long?) when I first heard about the guys at Rooster Teeth and their machinama series “Red vs. Blue.” Now many seasons later, I have the chance to re-connect with my boys in red and blue back in Blood Gulch thanks to a great DVD set from New Video that has the first five seasons all together plus some extras. “You ever wonder why we’re here?” is the first line in the whole series and what has developed from that one simple phrase has been great. It was a blast waiting for new episodes or shorts to be released and then talk about online and with my friends. Not to mention quoting the series in online multiplayer. And it was a blast to go back and watch my favorite PSAs and episodes! Well watching this DVD
